FEASIBILITY REPORT NOTES
A feasibility report is designed to provide information to support a project’s prospect of being successfully conducted and/or implemented. For the feasibility report in this course, you should select a topic that you would like to research or a topic you would like to investigate and propose/suggest a hypothetical question to answer.
Then collect your information. Information can be collected from such sources as the library, printed sources including the Internet (with sources cited) and from personal interviews of people in companies or organizations that might have helpful information or data on the topic. All information that you mention should be cited and credit given to your sources unless the information is widely and publicly known. If you quote or paraphrase others’ information or opinions or comments, you must cite the source. You could administer a very short questionnaire to someone who might have the information you will need, such as a mortgage lending officer or a banker or real estate professional if you are researching a topic involving real estate or property. Or you might use the same process for an engineering topic at your company or for a topic you wish to investigate in your specialized field of study.
Textbooks sometimes refer to a feasibility report as a recommendation report. Discussion about preparing the feasibility report is found on page 250 of the Thill book and may also be located found by studying the chapters other technical writing books such as the book by Markel. Also, listed in the Index of the Thill book is a long list of topics under Reports topic on p. 473. This section includes type of reports (238, 248-49) and supplementary report parts (280, 294) Also, the topics on designing reports in earlier chapters (check the index again).
The recommendation section or conclusions and recommendations can result in a “yes” or “no” about whether or not a project is feasible or unfeasible (for proceeding with a project) but should always be based on your findings and should be objectively presented.
The Report File in Files link page contains a sample of the front matter pages: Title Page, Table of Contents, List of Illustrations, and Summary/Synopsis. A list of sample topics is also included. The Body of the Report begins on page 1which is also in the report file material. While there is no specific length the report must be, generally, the body of the report should be about 8 pages double-spaced.
You do not need to skip any extra double spaces in the body of the report but you should indent the paragraphs. You can also continue with the second section of your body after Introduction on the same page as the introduction discussion. Just keep on entering material. The only separate pages might be where you place your graphics in your report, and you should allow plenty of space above and below them so that you can have some discussion of your findings in your graphs and tables and how this information relates to your topic in the Findings section.
You should write your report and then prepare the front matter pages or you can work on the front mater in draft format so that you can add in final facts as you obtain the information. I recommend that you create two files for your report. Name the first file Front Matter.doc (or docx) and name the second file FeasReport.doc. Then you can submit both files as attachments, and I will save, print the files, and grade them for your report grade. If you wish, you may also create a third file and include your PowerPoint slides if you wish to create a few slides which would be the presentation you would make to our class or to the audience/receiver of your report in the real world. Note that there are extra points in the report grade sheet in the Report File for including a PowerPoint presentation with your report.
Page Numbering (Also Called Pagination)
In the body of the report, you should number each page beginning with the first page as Page 1 and number all pages through the Works Cited and Appendix sections. Using the MLA documentation style, you would put your last name and page number in the upper right corner beginning with the first page in the Introduction section of the body. You can set this up as a header if you wish. You do not have to number the pages of the front matter, but I will show you how to do that as well.
The last page in the Report File is the sample report grade sheet. Please read it so you will know what is required of your report. If you have any questions, please call or e-mail me.
