Internet is a double blade. In a positive side, it gives voiceless people a chance to speak out for their rights. However, in another side, it is able to hurt people by online hate. The phenomenon are now more seriously than before. In Jon Ronson’s article “ how the online hate mob set its sights on me,” he gave readers three examples of cyberbullying intended to call on people to stop hurting people online. Many people, he indicated, never think of others situations and complain others in god view. Another author, Jeremy D. Larson, also points out the change that the internet brings in society in “why do we obsess over what’s relatable”. People have changed the understanding of word “relatable”. People used to identify this word as something connected us. But now, people used this word to measure how strange something isn’t. Our society are now gradually transforming into a surveillance society, because people want to connect to the world. They do not want to be the unique one since they are afraid of being left out. Social media’s creation of newfound social norms as well as expectations formed through reliability, has created a hostile online surveillance society.
When we break social norms we become open for judgement which leads to a surveillance society. The phenomenon became normal. Ronson mentioned an example in his passage “the joke was intended to mock her own bubble of privilege, but while she slept on the plane Twitter took control of her life and dismantled it. She became the worldwide number one trending topic that night.” (Page 1) As the context displayed, the other twitter users “mock” her privilege reveal that they shamed her without knowing any background and reason of why she did that. People online judge individuals through the way how other twitter users view this person not through the standard on the society. Even the judges are wrong, there are still many people would shame the person who are not supposed to be accused. Men lost their ability to decide what is right or wrong. They can only rely on others to see what is “correct”. They do not what to be the “wrong” one according to what Larson indicated “relatability is a desire for a connection to the world, to want what we see in others, especially if what we see in others is ourselves.'' (Pages 2)People are afraid to be different. They do not want to be left out, therefore they tried to act the same as others. Relatability is an action individuals develop through the changes of society in order to protect themselves from being left out. To see how other people act, men need to monitor others which leads to formed the surveillance society.
Relatability creates groups which leads to the form of privilege. It is easier for people feel relatable when they are physically alike. “Somewhere along the way, being white became seen as ‘relatable,’ and you started to see people of color only reflected as stereotypes or specific archetypes,” Rae, who is black, told The Guardian in 2017. (Lonson, Page 3). Because of the trend of people want to be relatable, they gather people who are physically or spiritually alike together. Therefore, privilege formed between the majority groups. However, people became more strict toward how to use their privilege. Once someone did something break their “rule”, they will kill you by their languages. Take Rachel Dolezal as an example, she said: “ I was getting misdefined by some people as a racist, and as a consequence I was starting to misdefine myself as someone who felt the need to leap into pretty much any ambiguous shaming and take a counterintuitive position.” ( Ronson, Page 5). People tore her up because she pretended to be a black female, but she actually is a white. A lot of people online accused her as a racist without knowing the motivation and background of why she did that. A few people did the same thing as her. That is why people think she is wrong. Individuals cannot find relatable factors from her. To prevent the same thing happen, people observe what others did and imitate what others did. Surveillance society gradually formed because the privilege appear.
People lack empathy because they want to be relatable and they are afraid of misuse their privilege, which then leads to form a surveillance society. In contemporary society, individuals do not as warm as people in the past. They became cold blood because the pressure in society. “The phrase ‘misuse of privilege’ was becoming a free pass to tear apart pretty much anybody we chose to. It was becoming a devalued term, and was making us lose our capacity for empathy and for distinguishing between serious and unserious transgressions.” ( Ronson, Page 4). The phrase “ free pass” implies that people now comment on others easily without acknowledging their backgrounds and motivations. This phenomenon caused by lacking empathy. They cannot think in another position. They always stand at the commanding heights of morality and accuse others. The ability to consider for others is getting weaker. Therefore, an author published a fiction — “cat person”. “The world of “Cat Person” was meant to be your world, your language, your voice, and in it was a little didactic lesson about relationships that we could all come away with.” ( Larson, Page 3). Individuals lack the ability to self reflect. Kristen Roupenian, the author of Cat Person, saw this problem and intended to change it. Lacking self reflection caused lack empathy which leads to less tolerance in the society. This cycle results in the form of surveillance society.
