FAS 202 INTRODUCTION TO HUMANIITIES

After reviewing the rubric for Milestone One as well as looking at the various works of art that where listed in the list of suggested comparisons it was quite difficult to narrow it down at first. But ultimately, the pieces I choose strongly depict honoring our fallen heroes and how it is shown throughout art. Each piece is unique in their own unique way but ultimately have that one commonality in common. My first piece that I chose is the “Arc De Triomphe” by architects Jean Chalgrin & Louis-Etienne Hericart de Thury. The arch is strategically placed at the Place Charles de Gualle. The second piece I have chosen is the “Vietnam Veterans Memorial” created by Maya Lin and is located in Washington DC. Each of these amazing pieces are depicting situations from the past wars and are honoring our fallen for their sacrifices that they have made as well as continue to make. There are numerous monuments, paintings as well as memoirs throughout history to make sure they are not forgotten.

These two memorials to our soldiers who have sacrificed for our freedom are perfect examples of how we continue to honor those who fought for us in the past. The French in the French revolution and Napoleonic wars as well as the men who ultimately lost their lives in the Vietnam war defending American and Vietnamese ideals for freedom. Each one is a significant depiction of their time-period.

Looking at today’s society and in the present day there is great dislike or lack of understanding for many of the wars that are going on around the world whether it is in the United States or in other countries. There are individuals who don’t see that some of the lives in those conflicts unfortunately will never come home to their loved ones. They are too busy blaming one person or another for the conflict starting instead of seeing how it affects the individual’s lives as well as trying to solve the underlying problem. In the world there are still few individuals who refuse to let those who were lost in battle to die forever and strive to keep their memories alive. Creating memorials like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial or The Arc de Triomphe shows just how important it is. In the present day there are memorials that are established to show their sacrifices and I know this from a personal perspective because my husband is in the military and has lost many of his buddies. Unfortunately, I have been to many of these memorials throughout numerous States.
