Based on what is occurring around the world and close to home, this is very interesting. Telework is known as one of the most popular ways to work, considering the pandemic and the shutdown that occurred across the globe. “This method of work is considered beneficial to the employer as well as the employees. Some of these advantages for the employees are less time commuting, saving money, and balancing work with personal goals” (Gardner, 2014). “Some of the advantages for employers are that the employees are more engaged, employers are able to retain their employees, and it is more cost-efficient” (Redjebov, 2020). “This sounds great but there are quite a few disadvantages as well (Redjebov, 2020). Some of these disadvantages for employees are no social activities with other employees and lack of creativity” (Gardner, 2014). The biggest disadvantage is that boundaries are harder to put in place, there is less than personal contact, and there are no face-to-face meeting at all with employees. Despite having these disadvantages, employers have ways to deal with them and not let them hinder their business. “In order to help with the meeting situation, there could be occasional meetings in the office to help with keeping up the interaction between all co-workers” (Global Workplace Analytics, 2016). “Additionally, it is important for employers to set policies and restrictions about when someone should be working and not working” (Redjebov, 2020). One way to help is by the employees keeping communication open with their employers to ensure the business and tasks are handled properly. Another point is that employers should advise employees what their expectations are. I worked for American Express and worked from my home, and we utilized phone, emails and chats to communicate with each other and our managers. It was also other tools to assist customers with as well. I enjoyed this system because you were able to speak to your manager, or reply to their emails, and also be held accountable for tasks that you were assigned to start off with. I feel that trust is the biggest thing that is needed for employers to allow telework. While it does come with its advantages and disadvantages, it is a great resource and with the right policies and procedures it can be the best part of the company.
