Fall Hazard Recognition, Prevention and Control Summary

Common fall hazards

Abstract

Falls have a relation to slipping or tripping in most cases. However, workers can undergo any risks of falls. Falling occurs because of, unstable ladders, work areas that appear as raised with the poor terrain, scaffolding and other equipment used in lifting that may put a person at a risk of critical and even hazard falls. These hazards often found in working places more so in mechanical areas of work such as the companies, factories, power fields, on top of roofs, or any other regions that appear elevated (WebMD 2017).. Significant protections needs implementation in areas that serve as a risk to people who work and may cause them to fall. Organizations need to use equipment for safety ensure that the workers are free from this kind of challenge. Falls cause injuries, which are preventable.

Most of the accidents occur because of carelessness, either on the part of the injured person or on the part of maybe the people who ought to create a solution to the problem. Better training help individuals to be careful and to ensure that they take care of any critical situation or environment that may cause harm to others (WebMD 2017).. Better enforcement of safety measures is essential. This safety measures safeguard the people from the risk of involvement in accidents. Every environment of work should be safe from any disaster; it should always be clean, dry, and free from harmful objects to the body.

Causes of common fall hazards

A significant purpose of falls is personal behavior, the environment, and factors involving an individual. Slips and trips occur due to many reasons. Lapses may occur during the cleaning of floors. This is because of the wet condition of the floor surface that makes them slippery. When an individual is not in suitable footwear that is rubber-like, this person is at high risks of slipping and falling. Contamination may also cause falls on people. Contamination of the floor with rubbish and any object that is slippery causes slipping and this ends up leading to falls (WebMD 2017). Lack of better footwear may cause easy slipping, making a person to fall. An individual ought to have footwear that has lasting trades and are of rubber material to maintain stability when walking on any floor, where rough or slippery floor. Walking bare feet may cause one to slip and fall.

Falls may occur because of the physical condition of an individual. Weak muscles affect the strength that one may have. When the concentration of an individual is under effect stability, and balance goes down. This makes one be in a position that he or she cannot do daily chores in the right way. Weak muscles may be because of lack of exercise, diseases, and age. This condition makes one unstable and may cause frequent falls (WebMD 2017).

Lack of proper balance is also a cause of falls. Poor balance may occur because of lack of strong muscles, poor health condition, and medication. The use of drugs may affect the health in a way that it causes the effect to the state of the muscles. This kind of situation makes on not be stable and may end up causing common falls on people. Poor balance may also occur because of dizziness caused by lack of sleep as well as reduced eating habits.

Dizziness occurs because of the drop in the pressure of blood, aging, dehydration, the condition of the health status, and other body complications such as the heart failure. Falls also occur because of faints or the loss of consciousness. Blackout commonly attacks some groups of people putting them at a risk of having fallen. Falls may be because of foot complications. Foot problems such as calluses, corns, and bunions as well as wrong footwear put one at risk falls. Foot problems are a hindrance to exercise and active keeping for an individual. These complications make the foot muscles to be weak causing no stability and hence a person is likely to fall most of the time. Numbness of the feet may cause falls too.

Falls may come about due to the loss of memory or confusion, which comes about by the difficulty in right thinking. This situation produces an effect to the brain on decision making as well as judgment. Dizziness may also occur due to insufficient flow of blood to the brain, which happens when an individual spends a long time standing. Standing for a long time causes tiredness and brings about situations when the blood may fail to flow to the brain causing faints. This is a dangerous cause of falling because it may lead to an unfortunate effect on the body.

Poor vision and hearing ability may be a reason to frequent falls. Eye problem causes a hindrance in spotting the environment and knowing the safe place to walk. Poor vision may be a cause of wrong lighting, which is a contributor to falls. With low vision ability, an individual may not be in a position to see and determine any object on the way that may cause him or her to trip and fall. For stability and right movement, the vision is significant. With poor eyesight, an individual risk falling. Medication is also a risk of falls because most of the medicine that patients take affects their strength and many at times cause dizziness, drowsiness, and vision that is blurred. These complications increase an individual’s chance of falling. These side effects generated out of the admission of medicine may be a reason for age, weight, ethics, gender, and lack of meal that goes strength. When taking medication, an individual should ensure that he or she is in a position that no complications may cause a fall upon him or her.

A primary cause of frequent falls is the use of hard drugs that affect judgment and destroys an individual’s strength. Too much of alcohol makes one not to be stable, and it affects the ability of the muscle to sustain a person. This effect brings up a high risk of falling at any time. Drugs also wear out the muscles and make on weak by the interference of the mind. It leads one to make wrong judgments as well as causing drowsiness. This situation creates a lot of falling among individuals because they may not make a right step on where they step because of the impairing of their judgment.

Falls are common to the old aged. Ageing causes a higher risk of frequent falls. The aging process causes fatigue on the body of an individual making them have weak muscles, which causes the loss of strength and stability. Because of the instability that they suffer, they are always at a high risk of falling. The muscles wear out with time, and these people are prone to falling when they do not have anyone or any object to support them. Environmental factors are major causes of falls on people. Lousy structure of the environment causes instability among people. That is when the terrain is in bad shape as well as when the surrounding is disordered that an individual cannot see well when walking, there is always a high risk of falling. Poor floor texture and steepness case a threat to the stability and may cause some declines. Poor establishment of the staircases also creates because it is a risk to security in individuals. When the stairs are so steep and do not have rills around them, a person becomes at a high risk of falling.

Bladder and bowel conditions may also cause falls in persons. Bladder conditions that cause one to rush to the toilet at the most time during the day and night make one suffer the risk of falling. In these cases, falls occur because of a rush as well as the effect of leg muscles from the abdominal complications. This is because the condition renders one unstable and makes an individual feel dizzy most of the time when getting up from seats or lying postures (Voukelatos et al., 2015).

Common fall prevention and solution

The implementation of effective measures of fall control causes protection on workers, and it ensures the prevention of accident, unnecessary injuries, and illness. The prevention tips serve at home and the workplace. The sidewalks should always be in excellent condition. In case of cracks and sharp edges, the breaks need repair to ensure that the shape of the sidewalks does not cause any risk to people. Sharp edges should not exist on the paths.

Handrails should be available on the stairs and step. These rails protect an individual when elevating up a building. Bushes should not exist on the environment, and every plantation needs trimming to ensure that the situation is clean and safe. There should not be high doorsteps that may cause people to trip. Walking areas should be bright and should have proper lighting provided to ensure that individuals may see well and the terrain should be flat at all time. Every flow should have a maximum standard of steepness in a way that the stability of individuals may not affect.

The environment should be clean at all times to reduce cases of tripping because of floor contamination. In cases of spillage, the floor should always be dry and prevented from being slippery. The old aged need a lot of care and support while walking. To those with muscle problems, they should have wheelchairs that will assist them in walking if they do not have any person to support them always. On the other hand, the blind should have the white cane that they use to ensure that they step on the right places that may not cause them to trip. They should also have people who assist them to walk. Pathways should not be bushy and should not have any harmful objects.

The bathrooms should have strong grab bars around the tabs and walls for stability at all times. Mats should also be available to ensure that the feet are dry in such areas. The mats prevent cases of slipping. A dispenser for the liquid soap needs mounting on the wall to reduce instances of contamination of the flow, which may cause it to be slippery. The floor in the bathroom should always be dry if not the texture of the floor should not be incredibly smooth in a way that an individual may sleep. A person should ensure that he or she puts on better footwear that is of rubber texture to maintain the stability when visiting the areas that are smooth and are always watery.

The kitchen should always be dry. Commonly used utensils should be readily available and accessible to reach out. This minimizes walks within the kitchen that may cause one to trip and fall. When in need of equipment stored in upper shelves, an individual should use s stable tool that will allow him or her reach out for the stuff. Most commonly, a firm stool that is not so high needs consideration. There should not be cases of floor polishing or waxing to ensure that the floor is not smooth at all times.

Electrical appliances should be in strategic locations where they cannot cause harm to the individuals. Room needs the proper arrangement of furniture and any other equipment. Find the harmful objects should always far from direct access to reduce cases of injuries. The factories need a better mechanism where every machine should be at the right place and away from causing distractions as well as making workers trip on them. The harmful objects need sealing, the factory should always be clean, and its floor dry. The workers should have good wear more so the footwear that will make them safe and build on their stability.

Spillage at places of work especially in factories need clean up immediately they occur. Right cleaning agents used during the cleaning up. With the use of the right cleaning agents, cases of the spillages to remain will be few and hence the floor prevented from any instances of being slippery therefore the risk of falling reduced. After cleaning up, the level needs to be dry at all times. Prevention of spillage or wetness should take place at the right time and in the right way.

Cables and any wires used for connection should be at the right place at all times. The cables installation should always take place along the walls and not on the floor next to pathways to reduce the cases of tripping. The cables should always be inside the cable guards for protection and prevention of frequent falls. Workers should still use appropriate footwear at all times. To reduce cases of slipping, the soles of the shoe should have strong and lasting trades, or they should always be rubber because of the stability even when the floor may be wet, and a person may be in a hurry. The mats and rags on the floor should have the right and sure fix. This reduces cases of tripping (Voukelatos et al., 2015). Having rigs should also be part of the prevention measures because rags may even help us ensure that the environment is always dry and free forgetting slippery.

The sloppiness of every elevation feature should be one that affects even the disabled so easily. Setting long or high-level stairs may base cases of tripping so much. Lighting system needs accurate installation every one. Faulty equipment needs eradication form the workplaces and at home. The floor needs a light fitting where the level is not a fantastic one. It needs pepper, and it should always work by droop. Stairs should be at a right level and should still offer the best condition from the sun.

Most of the accidents occur because of carelessness, either on the part of the injured person or on the part of maybe the people who ought to create a solution to the problem. Better training help individuals to be careful and to ensure that they take care of any critical situation or environment that may cause harm to others. Better enforcement of safety measures is essential. This safety measures safeguard the people from the risk of involvement in accidents. Every environment of work should be safe from any disaster; it should always be clean, dry, and free from harmful objects to the body.

The people need better training on how to be careful on their walks. Individuals should ensure that they do not rush all the time. Instead, they should always move with much care. Taking care of the old is very important. They need people who can assist them do some chores in life, and they should spend much time indoors in a better environment that does not cause them to fall. They need care and support at all times when walking and moving around the environment. Creation of awareness should have an implementation, where people receive education on how to keep feet and take care of the environment so that they may do away with the hazards that cause frequent falls. They should also receive education on how to have medication so that they may not have cases of drowsiness whenever they take medicine. On this case, the physicians should ensure that right dosage given to the patients according to their age, weight and physical stability so that they may curb cases of fainting upon the taking of medicine.

Addicts to drugs should make sure that they take alcohol at a low amount that will enable them to walk comfortably without being at a risk of falling. In case of drunkenness, they should make sure that they do not walk at night and in places where there is no right lighting system. Most of the time, advice given is that they drunkards make sure that they spend time drinking at their positions of rest.

Individuals should ensure that they take on enough exercise at all times. Training is vital because it enables one develop strong muscles that improves on stability (El-Khoury et al., 2015). Practice should take place regularly. Exercise enhances activeness of the body in a way that it takes a form any feelings of dizziness and makes an individual very stable. Activities also boost the stability of a person.

Patients under medication should make sure that they utilize medicine in the right direction. They should also ensure that. The patients should eat at all times to ensure that they are fit and have some stability as well as strength to get up (El-Khoury et al., 2015). Workers should ensure that they are concentration and reduce cases of carelessness. Individuals should not spend much time working or standing. One needs to take rest on the suitable interval of time to ensure that he or she has enough power to move.
