I found this paper to be both informative and innovative. It was unique in the fact that it

examined the extent to which a proposed solution to racial and class inequities in public school

education, actually reinforced the very problem it sought to address. The mere fact that you were

aware of this phenomenon demonstrated that you were attuned to the realities of social justice

and the current needs of the larger community (i.e. New York City). Put simply, I would never

have thought to address this topic and for that reason I am incredibly impressed by your

connection to the field.

In the interest of providing feedback, I would say that I was slightly confused as to

whether or not you found public school choice to be inherently flawed or merely missing its

objectives in practice. From my interpretation of your writing, I concluded that public school

choice was a beneficial program but became antiquated in its delivery due to market reforms

categorized by gentrification. If I am correct in my assessment of your work then it would seem

the desired outcome would be structural changes to the administrative components of the

program, as opposed to a theoretical overhaul of the entire concept of public-school choice. In

short, my suggestion would be for you to elaborate on one of the specific inhibiting variables

mentioned in your second paragraph as the problem you would hope to address through your

intervention. Given the in-depth analysis already offered on the lack of parental access to

information on the program, I would presume that this would be the best specific problem to

solve. After summarizing correlational factors related to the disparities in information allocation

about the public-school choice program, I would recommend that you implement a theoretical

framework that would attempt to explain causation (e.g. maybe white supremacy was behind a

deliberate attempt to deceive parents by withholding information; maybe market forces related to

the competition of low-skilled labor prevented working parents from having the flexibility

needed to access the information; maybe components of internalized racism played a role in

imposing upon parents’ abilities to advocate for themselves, etc.). Finally, I would suggest

concluding your paper by proposing a solution to this problem and attempting to address why

this solution should be effective (at least conceptually).

Overall, I felt this assignment was excellent and clearly demonstrated your familiarity

with the field and passion for the material. Please keep me informed as you move forward with

the work.

I think you did an excellent job explaining the realities of Public School Choice. You clearly laid out the

variables that make this system unjust and perpetuate segregation. I also appreciate how you placed

PSC on the national stage and explained that it is not just a New York problem. I would love to know

more about the direct effects this issue has on the students, other than resources. How are students

responding to this system psychologically? I wonder if there have been studies on students who are

stuck in this system.

You explain that this is both a race and socioeconomic issue, making it very complex. I would like to

know more about what role a social worker can play in this issue. If there is evidence of social workers

being part of the problem or part of the solution. Also, how social workers may be able to support

students, families, and communities who are negatively affected by Public School Choice. I did not know

anything about PSC in New York before reading this article and I am inspired to continue research. Thank
