Papers must be printed out and stapled.
No papers will be accepted via e-mail.
Late work will not be accepted.
There are 2 choices for this assignment.
1) The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (Near UCLA)
Free Admission/Parking $15
OR
2) The Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena
Free Admission with ELAC Student ID & Free Parking!
BEFORE you go, refer to the websites for visitor information. Click on “Visit” or “Visitor Information” for details. Also, think about the type of artwork that you would like to analyze before you go to the museum. This strategy will save you a lot of time! When you arrive at the museum, also take a brochure!
Ask a museum attendant if you are lost and let them know the type of artwork that you are looking for, so that you can be directed to the right section.
Writing Instructions
Choose 3 EUROPEAN artworks from either the J. Paul Getty Museum OR the Norton Simon Museum that are related to the topics discussed in our course. Discuss each artwork in terms of its historical, cultural, and stylistic/iconographic context.
Topic Choices
*Choose 3 “Classical” artworks from the Renaissance.
OR *Choose 3 “Mannerist” artworks.
OR *Choose 3 “Baroque” artworks.
Required Length of Paper
*6 pages minimum /7 pages maximum
*The last page of your paper is the “Works Cited” page.
* The “Works Cited” page does NOT count as part of the 6 - 7 page requirement.
* Images of the artworks do NOT count as part of the 6 - 7 page requirement.
*Images of the 3 artworks should be included AFTER your “Works Cited” page.
Required ESSAY Format:
*Introduction, Thesis Statement, Developed Paragraphs in Body of Paper & Effective Conclusion
*Double spaced
*Times New Roman or Ariel font
*Size 12 font
*1”inch margins
*Staple a museum ticket to the front of your project or paper clip a brochure to your paper. Proof of museum visitation is required.
*Write your name on the ticket or brochure.
Required Research Guidelines:
*Find 3 - 4 research sources for each artwork.
*The sources can include the museum’s web-site, academic journal articles and other scholarly books. (Our textbook can’t be used.)
*One of the sources for each artwork MUST be from an article published in an academic journal.
*To give credit to your research sources use the MLA citation format.
Required Research Guidelines:
*Cite your sources in your text AND also provide a list of sources for
the reader at the end of your analysis on your “Works Cited” page.
Do NOT use information from ANY of the following sources:
*Our course textbook
*Any book or journal article published before 1980
*Wikipedia
*Any web-site ending in .com
Any papers containing information from Wikipedia or from web-sites ending in .com will automatically receive 0 points.
