Police Brutality

Claim: As a result of police officers in the United States disproportionately targeting, brutalizing,

and harassing black people in comparison to other groups, black people, particularly black men,

are much more likely to be victims of police brutality. This continues to remain a controversial

topic due to some people believing that police brutality is exaggerated and not rooted in systemic

racism despite all of the evidence pointing otherwise.

Support 1: Racial biases in the criminal judicial system towards black men are used against them

in order to justify the use of violence to subdue them, even if they were unarmed. Studies show

that people tend to perceive black people as more threatening which leads them to being targeted

more often by law enforcement.

Support 2: Black boys as young as 10 are more likely to be seen as criminals or untrustworthy

and, as a result, more likely to be victims of police brutality. This again goes to show how black

people are seen as more threatening compared to white people which allows police to be able to

justify their abuse of power towards them by blaming it on the illegitimate stereotype of implied

threat.

Opposing View: Opponents to the idea of police brutality tend to argue that reports of police

brutality are exaggerated and aren't a result of systemic racism. What these people fail to mention

is that when looking at the numbers, black people are much more likely to be targets to the abuse

of power from cops when compared to that of the white population, this disproportionality is due

to the systematic racism within the criminal judicial system.

Source 1: https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/psp-pspi0000092.pdf

This source is relevant because it provides studies that prove that black people are unjustly

stereotyped which leads to them being disproportionately targeted by police officers. This is

reliable because these studies were conducted by American Psychological Association.

Source 2: https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2014/03/black-boys-older

This source is relevant and reliable because it provides evidence for black boys being

disproportionately labeled as criminals at a young age compared to white people; this is also

directly from American Psychological Association.
