FAA 2301 M H I

F P G I Writing a formal research paper allows us to systematically approach a topic, gather information, refine ideas beyond generalities and abstractions, and confront fuzzy thinking. In addition we become more fully acquainted with a topic, its resonances, and our perspective on it than in a less structured environment. We write to learn, and we learn by writing. TOPIC: Your research paper topic should investigate the connections and related concepts of gender, sexuality, and/or similarities in compositional style and musical elements between a modern popular song and a specific musical work from the Medieval, Renaissance, or Baroque periods. LENGTH: Your final paper must be approximately 1500 words, which is approximately six (6) pages typed and double-spaced. This excludes the bibliography and other supporting materials. ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TYPED IN BLACK, REGULAR FONT, DOUBLE-SPACED, AND SUBMITTED VIA THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM PORTAL. APPROACHES: Your research paper should include all of the following: historical and cultural context, musical analysis, and independent thinking. The paper should begin with a clearly defined thesis which is then supported by research and analysis, with your personal conclusions closing the paper.

● This paper gives you a chance to take advantage of our excellent library resources, both online and otherwise. Once you decide on a topic, the next task is to find appropriate resources. A recommended place to start is the online music database, Grove Music Online . I can help you locate others if needed.

● For musical analysis, a good way to get started is with Style Worksheets. These are available from the instructor. You are welcome to include musical examples in the body of the paper as well, but they should be properly footnoted (see below).

BIBLIOGRAPHY: Be sure to include a complete bibliography at the end of your paper, citing all the sources you use, both those directly quoted in the paper and those simply consulted.

● For direct quotes you should also include footnotes in the paper itself. See me if you have questions about this. Please also include in your bibliography any recordings and scores you use in your musical analysis.

If you have any questions, comments, or reports to make, please e-mail or see me during office hours. I am always available for help. Good luck! Other General Guidelines for Papers

● Factual statements must be clear and correct. ● Arguments should be supported by logical reasoning based on facts presented. ● Papers are expected to demonstrate good organization and polished prose, and they

should contain NO errors of grammar or spelling. ● Responsible treatment of researched material is expected. Plagiarism or any other form

of academic dishonesty will be penalized by at least a failing grade on the assignment concerned and may result in dismissal from the College.

● Assignments must be submitted on time. This includes such assignments as turning in research topic, bibliography, etc. The penalty for lateness is loss of one full letter grade for the assignment for each day it is late.

● Song titles always go inside quotation marks; film, opera, and album titles are italicized. T S B: D D 3 Over Thanksgiving and the following week, you are expected to write at least one lengthy paragraph describing your topic ; i.e., your chosen musical compositions, and the approach you intend to take in regards to those works in your paper. It must include a thesis statement , which consists of a point of view, a particular perspective on your chosen compositions. You must explain what you are going to do with your topic, and how your approach is unique. This thesis statement must be supportable by research and analysis in the final document. If I have any questions or concerns with your project, this is the point at which we will discuss them. In exploring your topic, ask yourself the following questions:

1. What do I want to know? 2. How can I go about finding out? (multiple approaches to the topic) 3. What will each approach entail? 4. What resources are available to me? (immediately, in a few weeks, never…) 5. How do my goals, methods, and resources mesh with the time available? 6. Can this project be treated satisfactorily in the space available? 7. Can I complete the project I am considering in the time I have available??

For those of you still deciding on a historical composition, here are some suggested (and often neglected!) musicians (in no particular order). For any one of them, there are a number of compositions you could choose to research and write about. Do a bit of investigation and select a name that appeals to you; then I will be glad to help you choose a composition . Medieval: Hildegard von Bingen Leonin Perotin Guillaume de Machaut Renaissance: John Dunstaple Guillaume Du Fay Gilles Binchois Johannes Ockeghem Josquin des Prez John Taverner Martin Luther / Johann Walter Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Tomás Luis de Victoria Orlande de Lassus Carlo Gesualdo Giovanni Gabrieli

Baroque: Giulio Caccini Jacopo Peri Claudio Monteverdi Heinrich Schütz Giacomo Carissimi Michael Praetorius Jean-Baptiste Lully Henry Purcell Dieterich Buxtehude Johann Pachelbel Johann Sebastian Bach François Couperin Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre Arcangelo Corelli Antonio Vivaldi Alessandro Scarlatti George Frideric Handel Johann Sebastian Bach

● The bibliography should be arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. In the case of a reference with two or more authors, refer to your style handbook (four are listed below) for common practice. Be sure to format references with a hanging indentation ; that is, every line after the first of each entry is indented. (Check Word and WordPerfect under Format then under Paragraph for help with this.)

● You should have at least six sources; however, more are most definitely welcome. ● Your bibliography should include at least one tangible recording (CD, LP, cassette, video,

DVD, laserdisc) of your primary musical example or examples. When applicable, at least one musical score should also be included.

● Annotations are mandatory. As you check for a source’s applicability to your topic, record how the source will help you in your paper. This will help you save time later. A few short sentences on the content and value of the source are sufficient.

● Your bibliography must follow a consistent formatting style . I’m not particular about which style you choose, but whichever you do, please BE CONSISTENT.

FOOTNOTES

For citations and references within the paper itself, you will use footnotes, which appear at the bottom of each page. In Word and Google Docs, this is very easy to accomplish. The following is an example of how the footnote and the bibliographic citation are different. Note that the name is first then last, the publishing information appears within parentheses, the page number of the quote or information appears at the end of the footnote, and NO PERIODS appear in the entire footnote until the end.

A O: D D 7 Your second mini-assignment is to compile an annotated outline. This will be used during our peer review session and to prepare you for writing your final paper, due Dec. 10.

Outline By annotated outline, I mean that each point under your outline should consist of two or three (or more!) sentences that will become the starting point for that paragraph. Below find an example of an annotated outline for one paragraph: III. The Piece: Its Composition and Components

A. Reasons for Composition

1. Commissioned by John C. Baker for the sesquicentennial of OU

a) While any short orchestral work would have served – like an academic overture, etc., the name “rhapsody” was a conscious choice.

(1) “This led to the idea of using American folk tunes for a Rhapsody, much as Liszt did in his Hungarian rhapsodies.” (Dohnányi description, undated)

Remember that each 1 needs a 2, each “a” needs a “b.” Google Docs should make creating an outline easy. You need not follow the above format exactly; you just need to be clear on what is a section (I), what is a sub-section (A), and what is a paragraph (1) and sentences or concepts within that paragraph. A suggested format for sections would be: I. Introduction of your Topic, II. Relevant Historical Background and/or Biography (might be two separate sections), III. The Music: Background and Analysis, IV. Connections/Conclusions. Please let me know if you have any questions on this assignment. ♫ If you would like to include a rough draft as well as your outline, that is fine.

♫ If you would like to include a revised bibliography, I will accept them at this time.

♫ If you have any other questions, please see me.
