Part I: The Euthyphro ( 1 50 points) .
The minimum length is 1 full typed page.
S elect one of the following : A, B or C .
A. Discuss the stages in Euthyphro's attempts at defining ‘the holy’.
B. What is the philosophical significance of Socrates’ question: “Do the gods love it because it is holy? Or is it holy because it is loved by the gods?”
C. What philosophical lessons can be derived from the Euthyphro?
Part II: Plato and The Republic (1 50 points)
The minimum length requirement is 1 full typed page.
Select one of the following: A, B, or C
A: Discuss Thrasymachus ‘and Glaucon's arguments in favor of the unjust man.
B. Give a brief account of the story of the Ring of Gyges. How does Glaucon use it to express a hypothesis of human nature?
C. What are Plato's arguments against the notion that the unjust man is happier? Are you persuaded by Plato's argument? How does reason and knowledge set the conditions for a just and happy soul?
Grading Criteria for Ethics Essay Exams
- Correct Format. Cover page? Required font? Required margins?
- Does the paper properly identify and/or state the topic/questions to which the discussion is addressed?
3. Is there a clearly stated thesis or main idea in the introduction for each discussion?
4. I look for a focused body of discussion that supports your thesis or main idea. So, I’ve got to ask: does the paper provide adequate support in the form of concepts, ideas and/or examples covered in the readings and lecture?
5. A strong conclusion that ties the thesis to the discussion. Is your main point materially relevant to the body of your discussion?
6. Are the discussions complete? (Have you addressed the question asked adequately)? Has the paper omitted important concepts or terms? Has the paper provided sufficiently clear and detailed definitions of the key concepts?
7. Does the paper display solid content? (In the form of complete summaries, sound analysis, and the proper use of relevant class material)
8. With regard to composition, the paper is graded on grammar, sentence structure, spelling.

Form:
(1) Unity of thought and Coherence of Expression.
(2) Sentence and paragraph variety, grammar and spelling.
Content:
(1) “Reporting” is a concise demonstration of your acquaintance with the material. (Minimum requirement for a “C”).
(2) “Analysis” is the ability to compare, contrast, or critically evaluate the material. (Minimum requirement for a “B”).
(3) “Synthesis” is a demonstration of your ability to adequately develop your thesis (or main idea), and to reach a sound conclusion. (Minimum requirement for an “A”).
