Draft.1 Rhetorical Analysis of Debate

Is studying online better than physically attending? Recently this issue had

caused many conflicts and there are different points of view about. Some people

agreed the online studying it and others are fully disagreed with a lot of reasons.

In my opinion, I explored this issue recently when it came to my life after the

lockdown because of COVID-19 my university transfer the method of studying

from physically attending to online classes, I disgreed the online classes, but it is

fine if there was a big reason like COVID-19 that fources the students to use it.

First of all, many schools and universities studeny agreed the idea of studying

online and the students preferred that rather than attending physically. For many

reasons, they think it helps in saving their times. For example, it may take a long

time 2-3 hours to awake and get prepared for the school. However, in online

classes just 2-3 minutes to just open the video class and to set the table for that.

In addition, many students thinks studying online is accessible. For instance, they

can use it anywhere in the world like, if the students was forced to travel. He can!

Because the internet is everywhere and he can attend the classes easily. lastly, a

lot of students agreed with online studying because it can save them from the

current global disease which is COVID-19. This disease is spreading in a scary

way and there were people who was infected even when they were taking all the

safety instructions. So, if the students was attending physically it is very

dangerous for his health and body.

On the other hand, many students and universities are fully disagreed the idea of

studying online than attending the classes physically. Firstly, many teachers and

professors are not good with using the online techniques. So, they can't used

well the online chat, discussion forums and doing online meeting. As Christine

Greenhow, associate professor of educational technology in the College of

Education, 2018 Recipient of MSU’s Teacher-Scholar Award, answerd the

question about what are the dis advantages of studying online and she

mentioned this problem and she said "Teachers need to distill their key goals and

leverage technology features to meet them. Used well — online chat, discussion

forums, replayable video lessons, online meetings, etc. offer tremendous

opportunities to make students more engaged (and accountable) compared to

time-strapped classrooms where students hide and few hands shoot up.

In addition, internet connection is what makes many students prefer the physical

attending classes than online classes. For example, in my situation last math

midter. While doing the exam the connection of the internet became bad and I

used my phone to connect it perfectly. The professor who was monitoring us

called my name she thought I was cheating from my phone. This is unfair, but

she didn't listen to me while I am defending myself. I got 0 on the midterm and I

am really sad about it because it wasn't my mistake it was the lack of internet

connection. On of Cambridge University teachers Dr. Raquel Ribeiro mentioned

some stories and experiences of her students while they were struggling with

internet connection and she mentioned that one of her students had a problem

with entering the class, but what surprised her when the student's friend use

another phone and put it next to the computer and he called the student who

doesn't have internet to listen from the phone. She said that "These examples

show us the power of collaboration and how much our students are willing to do

to help us teachers and help each other."

Finally, this issue is related to my life specially because I am student and I

struggled a lot with the transformation from studying by attending physically the

classes to online classes. I agreed using online classes if there was a really big

problem in the world the same as the global pandemic COVID-19.

This source was considered as questioning for a professor of educational technology in

the College of Education called Christine Greenhow about the online classes and she

answered it the same way of my point of view which is disagree the online studying technique

because, she thinks that some teachers and professor are not used with dealing with the new

technique of teaching which is online. So, they are not able to discuss and talk with the students

perfectly. And this is unfair for them. When she said that “Teachers need to distill their key

goals and leverage technology features to meet them.” I felt that Christine Greenhow

was fully disagreed the idea of online studying.

The audience was anyone who is disagreed the idea of studying online either the person was a

student, parents or a teacher.

What the author professor Christine Greenhow wrote helped a lot in shaping the audience’s

understanding of the content. Because by proving from a professor who went through many

struggles with the experience of online teaching will help my audience to know exactly why

some people disagreed the idea of online classes.

This source was about a speech from a professor on Cambridge University sharing her

experiences which she and her students was faced with the internet connection in the online

classes the professor called Raquel Ribeiro. she was disagreed the idea of online

teaching for many reasons, but she focused on the internet connection which I

talked about in my piece. I shared in piece her student creative idea when his

friend got a problem with the internet, so he wasn’t able to attend the class. Raquel

Ribeiro said in her speech “One of my students had a great idea: she made a voice

call to this colleague via Whatsapp. She placed the phone next to her computer so

that her classmate could listen to the class and even take part” I like how the student

deal with the problem and my purpose by putting this situation was to clarify to my audience

how the student are struggling with the internet connection and teachers didn’t know what are

the challenges that led some student to enter the zoom class late.

The audience was the people who wants to know extra experiences with dealing with internet

connection problems while the online classes is working.

What the author Raquel Ribeiro wrote helped a lot in shaping the audience’s

understanding of the content. Because when my audience will read a real-life story

of internet connection, he will understand clearly the idea maybe by putting himself

in the situation.

Synthesis of both sources:

Both of the sources that I have used in my essay were having the same point of view which is

disagreeing the issue of attending the class online rather that attending it physically. Both of

them agree that online classes a not good idea. In both sources the author was a professor in a

university I adopted to put an example from the professor point of view because I am student and

I already know how the students thinks and believes. The two sources helped in shaping and

clarify what I want the audience to understand about my piece when I mentioned the point of

disagreement of the online classes issue. Moreover, these sources weren’t giving statics or facts

it was about sharing thoughts and experiences and this helps a lot the audience to recognize how

much the issue is affecting the people. In my situation, I agreed that studying online has many

negatives specially when I mentioned my story with my last math midterm the source I put was

helpful l to show how much the students struggled while attending the classes and the professors

should take the students reasons into consideration. My perspective in this, online classes should

be over when the COVID-19 ends because this is unfair for the students and physically

attendance will solve all of these problems.
