Music 100 Introduction to Music | Fall 2017 | Dr. Klaus Georg
Extra Project Instructions
All Projects MUST be turned in as pdfs in Blackboard. Email submissions and submissions not in pdf format will NOT be
accepted. If you don’t know how to create a pdf Google it. Microsoft Office, which you can get through the bookstore, does it
easily, and there are free programs available as well. The free web app Noteflight is ideal for composition projects and it will
save to pdf as well.
Project: Compose a serial piece Maximum Points: 15
Relevant Chapter(s): 29 Relevant Skills: Writing music
Instructions:
Write a very short piece in 12-tone (serial) form. Your piece must contain a valid tone row and at least two elaborations of the
tone row. Possible elaborations are inversion, retrograde, retrograde inversion, combining chunks of the tone row into chords,
augmentation/diminution, etc.
You can choose the musical forces, but I recommend 3 instruments or a piano and one additional instrument. Try to vary the
rhythms and use rests, repeated notes, etc. 4 measures of music should be enough to complete the assignment—make every
note count.
In addition to your musical example, please turn in a couple of short sentences describing how you structured the piece.
Example:
Violin plays tone row. Right hand of piano plays retrograde tone row twice. Left hand of piano plays tone row split into three
four note chords, once forwards, once retrograde.
