Extra Credit Opportunity—Hist 152

INSTRUCTIONS: Read the following guidelines thoroughly and carefully.

How do I turn in the extra credit? Email me at [email protected] with the SUBJECT

LINE: Extra Credit, last name, section #. For example: “Extra Credit, Shimko, Section 2.” You

can find your section number on MyPurdue. Attach your document to the email (do not put your

paper in the email text).

How will this impact my grade? It will replace either your lowest quiz grade or lowest

discussion grade for the semester. You must specify in the email which week’s quiz or which

week’s discussion you would like the grade to replace. You may complete this assignment

before the due date, but I recommend turning it in close to the due date so that you know

which grade you want to replace. Once you have chosen which quiz or discussion you want

to replace, you will not be able to change. For example, if you write in the email that you

would like to replace Quiz Week 1, but ultimately receive a poor grade on Discussion Week 7, I

will not change the discussion grade instead.

How do I earn this? Turn in a 1-page paper describing a historical figure event, group,

document, etc. that impacted or changed your view of American history. Restrictions: you may

not choose a person/topic that was part of a discussion post or primary source analysis this

semester.

When is this due? It is due December 6, 2019 by 11:59 EST. This is a hard deadline—there will

be no extensions, nor will I accept any submissions on December 7th, regardless of the time.

What is the format?

The first half of the paper should describe this person, event, group, document, etc. using

concrete historical details (with citations and references to the textbook and, if applicable,

primary sources). It should place your topic in its historical context (i.e. what was going on at the

time?)

The second half of the paper should be a description of how the topic changed your view of

American history. Be as specific as possible—vague sentences like “it made me think differently

because history turned out differently” will not result in many points.

The paper should be:

• No less than 1 page long

• Double-Spaced

• Times New Roman

• 12-point font

• 1-inch margins on all sides

What if my grade on this assignment is worse than my lowest grade? Then this assignment

will not count toward your final grade.

What will I be graded on?

• Specific citations and references to the textbook and/or a relevant primary source

• Placing your topic in its historical context (again, using concrete details)

• Specific examples of how your historical topic (person/event/document/group) changed or impacted your view of history.
