Welcome to our First Extra Credit Opportunity! For this Extra Credit Opportunity, you will watch a TED Talk from Tim Urban. In the video below, Urban shares his experiences as a "master procrastinator," and helps us to understand what long- term impacts procrastination can have on our lives.

Extra Credit Opportunities may be completed for additional credit in this class. Each opportunity may earn you up to 5 points total; the points earned depend on the quality of the work and engagement with the topic.

Extra Credit Opportunity 1: Procrastination and Online Learning For this extra credit opportunity, you will critically analyze your own experiences as a student, using Tim Urban's TED Talk for guidance. This critical analysis will take the form of a short, academic essay, and should do the following things:

Briefly summarize Tim Urban's TED Talk and identify his thesis. In other words, what is the position he takes on procrastination, and why? What are the main points he uses to support this position? Compare your own experiences as a student to those of Tim Urban. How has procrastination impacted you as a student? How does the "Instant Gratification Monkey" influence your actions leading up to major (or even minor) assignments? Reflect on how the shift to online education as a result of COVID 19 has impacted your tendency to procrastinate. Has it made you more of a procrastinator, or are you less likely to procrastinate? Finally, reflect on how you might change the patterns of behavior that have caused you to procrastinate (or, if you don't procrastinate, share the strategies that help you continue to make rational decisions and spend your time wisely).

Guidelines and Submission Details Write a formal academic paper that is 750-800 words long (2 1/2 to 3 pages). Although the majority of the paper should avoid first person, it is okay to use first person voice in the paragraphs that explore your own experiences.

Do not include the header, heading, title, or Work Cited page in your word count. Incorporate quotes from Tim Urban's TED Talk and cite them appropriately. Use OWL Purdue to guide your citation process (here is their guide for citing TED Talks). Use a creative and informative title for your paper. Follow the five-paragraph essay structure for this paper. Save your file as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf. These are the permitted file types for uploads. If you use Google Docs or Pages, you may have to export your file in one of these formats. Use your full name and Extra Credit 1 as the filename. Here is an example: KristinKaz_ExtraCredit1.docx.

Deadlines for Submission

This extra credit assignment is due by the end of our summer term and should be submitted no later than 8pm on Tuesday, July 28th.

There is no grace period for extra credit assignments.
