ESC1000 – General Education Earth Science 

Extra Credit Assignment 

Due: December 12 in Class 

 

Instructions: Select a topic of your choice pertaining to Earth Science. You can choose from current 

events, like new findings or you can choose something that has already been extensively studied.  You 

can for example describe the geologic attributes of a region, national park, ocean, lake, etc. You can 

write all about minerals and the ways we define and characterize them. You can choose to write about a 

certain volcanic eruption or the extent at which people work to climb extensive trails like Mount 

Everest, the Appalachian trail or even hiking through the Patagonia. Think creatively about what you 

want to write about. Find reliable resources to get your information from. Government websites are 

good resources as well as scientific articles and peer reviewed journals.  

 

Logistics: Make sure that you complete 3 pages – double spaced. Your font should be no bigger than 12, 

with acceptable fonts such as Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial. Your page margins should be no larger 

than 1 inch all around. After the three pages of text, include a page with your citations, you may choose 

any style of citing such as MLA, or APA. Please print your assignments and hand them in to me on 

December 12 at the beginning of class. I will not be accepting any late assignments.
