Ethnic Stereotypes as Logos-Art
EXTRA CREDIT 4 Ethnic Stereotypes as Logos image choice + essay
In our lecture we briefly discussed some of the ethnic stereotypes used as corporate logos/trademarks, such as Aunt Jemima, originally a character from the minstrel shows of the late 19th century. I wonder how many ethnic stereotypes are still used today as corporate trademarks? Many have recently been called out as propagating racial biases in advertising, and some, like the logos for Aunt Jemima and the Washington Redskins football team, have been removed (see links below). More are sure to follow.
Your extra credit assignment is to find one ethnic stereotypes (from anywhere in the world) used as corporate logo or trademark.
Answer these questions:
· Do you feel they are offensive? Why or why not? Does it matter?
· What are some of the cultural implications of businesses using a racial stereotype as a logo or trademark?
· What are some of the cultural implications of the removal of a racial stereotype used as a logo or trademark?
· Research if the country of manufacture of the product or ownership of the corporation (or both) is the same as the ethnicity of the logo/trademark.
Assignment:
1. Choose an example.
2. Write an essay (min. 500 words) describing your choice, and why you have chosen it. Explain your choice as it pertains to the assignment’s questions/parameters (above). 10-11pt/single spaced. Images of your choice must be included with the essay. Video choices may be sent as a link, .mov, .mp4, or other movie file.
3. Submit essay (with image included) into Blackboard. Click underlined title for submission.
Learning objectives: Through this investigation I hope we may ascertain some knowledge of how and why the images we see in advertising have been shaped, and how false and often negative stereotypes have influenced cultural and individual identity, and the deeper, underlying messages that are communicated through the widespread use of mainstream stereotypes and the marginalization of minorities in consumer culture.
EXTRA CREDIT / Possible +3 points towards your final grade.
