Aligned Assessments
Formative and summative assessments are used to check for student understanding, skill development, and mastery of material. Being able to identify the characteristics and purpose of each kind of assessment assists in the ability to choose the proper assessment type at the most appropriate time.
Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation on formative and summative assessments for a presentation to your colleagues. The presentation should include:
1. Description of the purpose and characteristics of each assessment type. The videos in the DQ1 CAT will discuss these two assessments. I suggest you watch these videos even if you do not complete the CAT itself.
2. Two examples of each assessment type. Two examples of formative assessments and two examples of summative assessments.
3. One advantage and one disadvantage for using technology with each type of assessment. One advantage and disadvantage for technology in summative assessments, and one advantage and disadvantage for technology in formative assessments.
4. How teachers align assessments to objectives. How can teachers be sure their assessments effectively assess the objective? (Think alignment- how is this done?)
5. How data gathered from these assessments would be utilized in the lesson planning process. What do you do with assessment data once it is collected?
6. Using your Topic 2 assignment, describe one formative and one summative assessment that aligns to the assignment’s standard and learning objective. One of each for the lesson you began last week. This will be on the standard that YOU chose in part 2, not 3.RI.7 from the example plan.
7. A title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes. Be sure there are presenter notes! This should be a presentation that you could show to colleagues in a professional development session.
The digital presentation should include graphics that are relevant to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately. Graphics should be used throughout to help make visually pleasing. Remember, this should be a professional presentation.
Support your presentation with 2-3 scholarly resources. A citation/reference slide IS required. Please review how to cite your sources if needed in the Writing Center.
