Expressing Appreciation
Expressing Appreciation
Person 1:
My expression of appreciation: Mom, I was thinking today about how blessed I am to
have you in my life. I realized that all of the "little" things that you do isn't so little. For example,
giving me advice when it was well needed, or just being there for me through thick and thin. I
know no matter the circumstance I can always count on you for anything if I asked for your
help. For as long as I can remember you have shown me what it means to be beautiful inside
and out. You also showed me how to be a strong independent woman and how to not give up
on myself. As I now enjoy being a Trident Technical College student, I often look back to my
own childhood and realize now how much you helped me through schooling. You helped me
with my homework every night, no matter how tired you were from working that day. You
learned how to do algebra for me, because you saw how bad I was struggling in my high school
algebra class and wanted to tutor me so that I wouldn’t have to take that class over again. I just
wanted you to know how much you are appreciated and to tell you not to take the so called
"little" things that you do for granted. Thank you, Mom for everything that you do for me. Love
you with all my heart -Jane
Their Response:
After I got done reading my expression of appreciation message to my mother
she dropped her sandwich that she was making and ran to give me a hug and started
crying her eyes out. She said that she had a horrible day at work and that it seemed that
everything that could go wrong went wrong the day I read her my message. After she
described in detail how bad her day was she also stated "Jane, You don’t realize how
badly I needed to hear that today." She went on to say that she couldn’t ask for a better
daughter and wanted me to know how much she appreciated me also. I took it upon
myself to finish making her sandwich and gave her something to drink. We spent the
rest of the afternoon talking about old family stories and just laughed until we couldn’t
laugh anymore.
Person 2:
My expression of appreciation: Daddy! I know that I don’t tell you this nearly enough,
but you really are the best dad anyone could ever have. The older I get, the more I realize that
this is true. You did everything in your power to give me a happy childhood and whatever I
asked you for. (clothes, toys, etc.) I know that you had to work really hard in order to provide
for our family. I now realize that the reason you worked overtime a lot was because you
wanted to better us in every aspect in life and I appreciate it so much now even though I know I
didn’t back then. I also wanted to thank you for all the daddy-daughter fishing trips, late
afternoon ice cream runs, and last minute movie dates. You have shown me how a real man is
supposed to treat a woman. I couldn’t imagine what my life would be like without having you in
it. I am beyond blessed to call you Dad and I really hope that you know I appreciate everything
you do for me. Love you daddy forever and always.
Their Response:
When I read my dad the appreciation letter that I wrote for him, he did not know
what to say. My dad is not the kind of man to cry or show too much emotion. He told
me "Baby girl, I already know that you love and appreciate me, but thank you for telling
me again." We then went our separate ways but we both knew that love and respect
would always be a factor in our relationship.
Person 3:
Dear Grandma, I just wanted to thank you for always feeding me. It doesn’t matter if I
spent the whole day at your house or if I just had to drop something off, I always left with a full
stomach. You are also an amazing friend to everyone you know and love. I swear that your
heart is made of gold. You inspire me everyday to be kind and giving even to those I don’t
know. I want to thank you for listening to all of my rants over the years. I know you'll always
listen and care about what I have to say. I love when you tell me about the stories of how you
grew up. I also love how you can make me feel beautiful even on my worst days. It doesn’t
matter what kind of situation I am going through you always have strong words of wisdom. You
are the wisest person that I know. I will always appreciate how you never break a promise or lie
to me. Everything that you have every promised me has come true and I will never get over
how I can rely on you no matter what. I just wanted you to know how much I look up to you.
You are the most intelligent, honest, kind, and caring person that I know. I love you grannie and
I hope you never forget it. -Yours truly, Jane
Their response:
I read my letter to my grandma and she broke down in tears. She said that none of her
grandchildren took the initiative to come and talk to her like I did. This in return made me cry
because I couldn’t believe how selfish all of us grandkids were. My grandmother is an
extraordinary woman and I am ashamed that I haven't done more to show her that. She also
told me "Grannie loves you sweetpea, don’t ever forget it." I stayed at her house for about an
hour afterwards just trying to spend as much time with her as I could.
