In this expository essay regarding analysis of a problem(s) and your proposed resolution(s), you should have three main parts:

1. A thesis that captures the reader’s attention—your first paragraph

Example: An analysis of the current climate change debate reveals that scientists and much of the public cannot always agree on the cause of the change.

2. Your body paragraphs should include an analysis of the problem or situation with examples or evidence and the proposed resolution.

Example: Continuing the above example, you would explain the current climate change debate from both the scientists’ viewpoint and the different public viewpoints as to the cause of the climate change. Then you would provide facts or evidence to support either the scientific view or the public’s.

3. Conclusion: This should provide another look at the thesis based on the evidence provided.

Example continued from above: You might conclude with a statement like: Although there appears to be a difference of opinion on climate change, the facts seem to support the scientists at this juncture in time. More importantly, the cost to people and the planet are too great to risk by not addressing the scientists’ recommendations to stem the effects of climate change.
