Final Experimental Project Dr. Evan Perrault

Groups
• First…
• I need to give you all access to our experimental survey.
• To do this…
Get Access to Qualtrics
• Login to purdue.qualtrics.com
• Sign up with your Purdue account
• I cannot “share” the survey with you if you do not have an account.
• I will be working on sharing the surveys with groups this week – so it is imperative you have a Qualtrics account.
The Experiment
• We will be determining whether the EPH strategy works in an online setting.
• Groups will send a survey link out to at least 16 people (8 men and 8 women).
• The Qualtrics survey is all set-up as a true experiment • IV manipulation (EPH vs. Standard request)
• Random assignment to conditions
• Controlling for extraneous variables • Experimental procedures will be the same for everyone
• Measuring other extraneous variables (prior donations, pet ownership)
In Lab
• You will come up with a list of 16 people (8 men, 8 women)
• Email those people • Must get/retain email responses from those people
answering you that they took the survey
• Each group has to obtain at least 15 completed surveys to earn full credit (15 points – half your lab participation grade) • Extra credit for obtaining more than 15 responses with
documentation. • (+.5 points for each additional person you recruit, up to
6 extra credit points = 12 extra people = N=27)

Subject Line: Please help for a class project for [your name]
Hi [enter person’s name],
This semester I’m currently in a communication methods class, and for our final assignment (worth a large portion of my grade) I’m required to collect data from my friends and family using an online survey.
The survey is completely anonymous, and asks questions about various attitudes and your own pet ownership. The survey also has a part where we are seeking donations for a local no kill dog shelter close to Purdue’s campus (Natalie’s Second Chance shelter). The choice of whether or not to donate is completely up to you.
Would you please be willing to complete this quick survey for me? It should take less than 5 minutes to complete.
If you are willing to take the survey: - Please complete it by Thursday October 29, and then email me to let me know that you completed the survey. I need this to show my professor so I can earn course credit.
If you are unable to take the survey: - Please let me know quickly so I can email someone else.
Would you be willing to answer my short survey? Click the link below to be taken to the survey:

Thanks for your help!
Sincerely, [Your Name]
The Experiment
• IV Manipulation (random assignment): • Even a Penny Will Help
• Control (standard donation solicitation)
• DV: • Did the person donate?
• How much did the person donate?
• Participant mood
• Level of financial need perceived
DV collection
DV Collection
• Natalie (from the dog shelter) will also be sending data to me regarding each of the donations, separated by the “description” typed in.
How do we randomize? Qualtrics does it for us.
The Experiment
Also – we ask a host of other attribute variables • Age
• Race/Ethnicity
• Gender
• Whether or not previously donated money to a pet shelter
• Whether or not they’ve adopted pet from a shelter
• If they own a dog/cat/other animal
• Are they a full time college student?
• All of these are things you can/will develop other hypotheses from • E.g., Women will donate more frequently than men
Data Collection
• All data must be collected by Friday 10/30 by 10:30am = just a week to collect data – you’ll obtain more details in Lab on 10/23 • I will deactivate all surveys at that time
• You MUST hand in response emails to earn lab participation credit – and these responses must match the number of responses shown for your group’s survey in Qualtrics • FAKING data not only jeopardizes the integrity of the
data– it is academic dishonesty, and everyone in the group will receive a 0 (zero) for the project – no exceptions
Creation of Hypotheses
• I give you 1 H and 2 RQs to test: • H1: A larger percentage of target individuals who receive a
request for a charitable donation that includes an “Even a Penny Will Help” (EDH) strategy will donate in comparison to individuals who receive only a standard request for a charitable donation.
• RQ1: Will the average amount of donation differ in the EPH versus the standard request conditions?
• RQ2: Will the condition to which participants are exposed (EPH vs. SR) have an effect on the level of financial need they feel Natalie’s shelter is in?
• You come up with 3 other Hypotheses to test • You will test these using the inferential statistical tests we will
teach to you the rest of this term: • Chi-square, correlation, independent samples t-test
Write up a Report (5 parts)
• Rationale • State and support the H’s and RQ’s you’re
testing/analyzing
• Method • Descriptive statistics about the sample (e.g., number of
participants, demographics [e.g., mean age, gender], how many people were assigned to each condition)
• Explain experimental procedures
• Explain the variables you measured, and how you measured them (only explain the variables you use to test/answer your H’s and RQs).
Write up a Report (5 parts)
• Results • Restate each H and RQ as own paragraph, explain test
run, and report results
• Discussion • Summarize your findings
• What do these results mean?
• Discuss at least 2 limitations of the study
• Suggest at least 2 directions for future research
• Appendices / Outputs • Include all SPSS outputs as Appendix at END of paper.
Hotseat
• One limitation to this study is that someone could be recruited multiple times from different groups, and take the survey multiple times
• True
• False
Participant Recruitment
• Recruit people you KNOW will not be recruited by others • Family members are great
• Members of sororities, fraternities, co-ops, clubs – not so great
Peer evaluation
• You will complete a peer evaluation survey via Qualtrics by the day the project is due (12/2/2020) for each of your group members
• This is worth 10 points of the final group grade
Questions?
• All final project documents are on Brightspace
• If you haven’t read them – please do • Most all questions you have should be answered by
