self assessment paper leadership personal skills.
The internship went even more better for me at Harbin Five Stars Construction Material Company to date. The draft of the small volume packages was present to the CEO, and all the other departments’ director. There are few more things to adjust but overall seems fit to the FSCMC’s strategy. The relationship with my colleagues went fantastic since there was a lot of personal after-work time we spend together. However, there was a member of my team was dismissed directly from CEO. The details will be explained in the following report.
(A) Personal Learning Objective
(a) Personal Learning Objective for past three weeks
There were mainly two learning objectives for me for the past three weeks. First and foremost, get along with my colleagues within my department, build my own reputation as soon as possible. I was thinking to change their mind about following my logic of the decision instead of question my words. The situation becomes better specifically with Tiangang’s relationship. During week 5, he talked about his son need a laptop for his college during the lunchtime, however, the price of the same laptop in China is extremely high if compare with U.S. price due to the Chinese import tax. He was asking me genteelly weather I could able to buy a laptop for his son recently from the U.S. Honestly, I didn’t feel well at the moment he was asking me, the request was way to beyond the level of our relationship we had right now. But I still said yes since I really want to get close to him. My logic is if I could able to make Tiangang turn towards to me which is the hardest person. Then the other colleagues will notice, and it is easier for me to change their mind, and follow my decisions. Finally, I figure my way to bring an almost half price of a Samsung laptop from the U.S. from my friend for Tiangang in the middle of week 6. Of course, he really appreciates what I have done for him, and start to slightly change his attitude toward me. Even though the change is not giant, but I can still feel it. Also, our department spends a great time together after work for eating and drinking. Chinese workplace has a potential culture called alcohol culture. As long as people are willing to spend time with others for drinking, it is easier for those people to get along including making friends. So, this learning objective went well for the past three weeks within the company. I believe there will be more achievement for this learning objective for the last few weeks. I will keep myself eye open for sure to increase the level of relationship between me and my colleagues.
The other learning objective is to present a small package plan draft to the FSCMC in order to achieve the marketing goals. I did present a report with comprehensive research to FSCMC’s CEO, after few adjustments, she presents this draft plan to all the other departments. Since the report was written in Chinese, I didn’t attach the report to you. Summarily, I present the packages can be distributed with a 5Ibs and 1Ibs instead of 22Ibs. The reason for 5Ibs and 1Ibs are according to the production efficiency report from the lab for normal personally kitchens and restrooms use. The biggest issue, for now, is the small volume packages’ design development. Since the FSCMC factory is only capable of produce the liquid, the new small packages have to be ordered from another plastic products factory. The increase of the packages numbers use will directly lead the cost increase, and decrease the net revenue potentially. I found two factories which can produce our small package for our products, and we are still in the middle of the negotiation. Also, I am in the middle of present an income statement for small packages best case, and worst case this week and next week. There will be more discussion after the income statement is done. The final decisions and results are waiting to be seen. Lastly, according to these six weeks’ internship, I believe I familiar with the company operation rules, rewards and punishment system, reimbursement process, and company mission statement and goals. Like a lot of companies, the operation core of the FSCMC is to spend less money to earn the biggest value from it. Also, the visits from the franchisers to FSCMC factory was 90% success, details will to be told during the analysis the significant event.
(b) Personal Learning Objective for next three weeks
Firstly, the continue of increasing the level of relationship between myself and my departments collogues is still my primary goal for next few weeks. The gathering between each department and my own departments after work time will be continue exist. The relationship between human beings requires a long time and efforts to build. The final goal of myself of the relationship of us is they will miss me after I get back to U.S. in fall. Especially, so-called success if they will miss my decisions making processes, and me personally being with them while working. Next, like the report mentioned above, I am on the middle of presenting an income statement for the best case and worst case for small packages for FSCMC along with the target market analysis. The future analysis is required after both report is done. Finally, the new idea appear to my head is that the FSCMC’s aging problem. The average age of FSCMC is 40 years old which is sincerely hard to accept the new business trends like B2B and IoT. I plan to make some presentations if possible for these new business trends to company’s employees in order to let them know and familiar where will the modern businesses go recently. Certainly, this plan will be considering more details after the small packages draft is finished. For now, I will present some cases like Air Canada, and smart cities in order to let them easily understand what is IoT and B2B are. Meanwhile, I will give some suggestions in the end of presentation consider the current situation of FSCMC.
(B) Analysis of a Significant Event
There were not happen any giant event like Harbin International Economic and Trade Fair. However, there were some significant visits from potential franchisers to the FSCMC factory during the past three weeks. The schedule I made fit the CEO’s requirement and franchisers time. However, something happens to lead one of my department’s employee Guo was dismissed by our CEO directly. There is a speaker for presentation to the potential franchisers or anyone would like to hear information for FSCMC supposed to be in the factory all the time. However, the speaker was moved by someone from the factory to the company, and CEO asks Guo specifically to move the speaker back to the factory in order for future use. But he totally forgets this situation, until the day of franchises come to the factory. So, there are no speakers during the presentation, and people have to communicate with each other sincerely loudly. As his direct leader, it is my duty to make sure every employee from my department to follow exact words from CEO, and I fail it. During the evening of the same day, our department manager and CEO give two of us a strong criticism, I fully accept it which I totally understand as a leader, it is my fault for oversight Guo’s duty. But he cannot accept this criticism from the CEO. He presents that everyone made mistakes, it is CEO’s fault to blame Guo that hard. This word makes CEO even angrier, and after a drastic argue between CEO and Guo, CEO dismisses the working contract with Guo. I was trying to stop them while in the middle of the argument, it couldn’t succeed. Afterward, CEO talked with me for another hour privately, the most memorable impression for me is when she said: “for the most of the time, you, as an employee, has no right to question my decisions including criticism as long as you make a mistake. The main job is to follow the decisions whatever I made, try your best to prove my decision is correct.” The immediate execution ability in the workforce is the key to evaluate whether an employee is qualified for this job. For the most of time, as a leader, whenever your employee question you mean he didn’t qualified for this job at all except some special situation like he was willing to give you some kind suggestions.
(D) Profession Work Responsibilities and Performance
(a) Goal and Tasks: The continuous grow the level of relationship between myself and the entire company’s employees. It is also will be a good time to build my own reputation within the company. Meanwhile, follow the standards operation processes, and rules for employees, maintain the clients’ relationship all over China; be focused on the detailed schedule for small packages forecasted income statement for best and worst case, be ready for preparing the presentation about B2B and IoT and its recommendation specific towards to the FSCMC.
(b) Specific accomplishments: Well know of the FSCMC’s background, business module, mission statement, and goal; getting familiar the company operation rules, rewards and punishment system, reimbursement process, be on time for work every day; success draft the small package plan for the company; For my goal, I don’t want to see any situation like my employees be dismissed because they didn’t have immediately execution ability during the work environment. I also plan to call a meeting together with my manager regarding this issue to my department.
(c) Evaluate my progress performance: 4.5, I never late for work for last six weeks, and follow and make sure my department follow the words CEO said successfully. However, I truly blame myself for Guo’s dismiss from FSCMC. As a group’s leader, the responsibility should be carried when anyone makes mistake from your group.
