Welcome to our Modifying Quotes Exercise! Our second Special Topic Presentation focused on techniques for modifying quotes, which is a writer's strategy that can be especially helpful in advanced academic writing.

Although Canvas calls this a "quiz," bear in mind that I am using this format only because it offers a similar structure to a worksheet. Unlike our Grammar Quiz, there is no time limit for this exercise.

This exercise is made up of 10 questions. Each question presents a task related to strategies for modifying quotes. You will find a combination of multiple choice, short answer, and fill-in-the-blank questions, each of which is designed to put what you have learned from our Special Topic Presentation into practice.

Important Exercise Details This exercise does not have a time limit. You will have one opportunity to complete this exercise. Questions will appear one at a time. Once you have answered a question and navigate to the next one, you will not be able to navigate to the previous question. This exercise is worth 10 points total.

Submission Deadlines This exercise should be completed by 8pm on Saturday, July 18th.

您的答案:

Read the following paragraph about the health benefits of owning a pet. Then, write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) that embeds a modified quote from the source paragraph; only one sentence in your paragraph should be a quote. Apply strategies like trimming or use brackets or ellipses to modify the source material you use.

From "Why Having a Pet is Good for Your Health" by Harvard Women's Health

Watch.

If you've ever shared your home with a pet, you know that an animal can bring love and companionship into your life. But could your furry friend also protect you against heart disease and help you live longer? Research suggests it might—although the protective effects depend on which type of animal you have and how you interact with your pet. In May 2013, the American Heart Association (AHA) released a scientific statement associating pet ownership with reduced heart disease risk factors and greater longevity. Yet the research leans toward one type of pet in particular. "I think the data are pretty compelling that people with dogs have better health," says Dr. Thomas Lee, a cardiologist and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. "There isn't evidence that other animals, like cats, are associated with better outcomes."

Pet are our best friends in our daily life, and they are also your most loyal follower. In May 2013, research shows that associating pet can lower the risk of having heart disease. Read the following paragraphs about the health benefits of walking. Then, write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) that embeds a modified quote from the source paragraph; only one sentence in your paragraph should be a quote. Apply strategies like trimming or use brackets or ellipses to modify the source material you use.

From "It's a Superpower: How Walking Makes Us Healthier, Happier, and

Brainier" by Amy Fleming

O’Mara’s enthusiasm for walking ties in with both of his main interests as a professor of experimental brain research: stress, depression and anxiety; and learning, memory and cognition. “It turns out that the brain systems that support learning, memory and cognition are the same ones that are very badly affected by stress and depression,” he says. “And by a quirk of evolution, these brain systems also support functions such as cognitive mapping,” by which he means our internal GPS system. But these aren’t the only overlaps between movement and mental and cognitive health that neuroscience has identified.

I witnessed the brain-healing effects of walking when my partner was recovering from an acute brain injury. His mind was often unsettled, but during our evening strolls through east London, things started to make more sense and conversation flowed easily. O’Mara nods knowingly. “You’re walking rhythmically together,” he says, “and there are all sorts of rhythms happening in the brain as a result of engaging in that kind of activity, and they’re absent when you’re sitting. One of the great overlooked superpowers we have is that, when we get up and walk, our senses are sharpened. Rhythms that would previously be quiet suddenly come to life, and the way our brain interacts with our body changes.”

Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. Walking every day can increase health and brain muscle. Unlike some other forms of exercise, walking is free and doesn't require any special equipment or training. "One of the great overlooked superpowers we have is that, when we get up and walk, our senses are sharpened. Rhythms that would previously be quiet suddenly come to life, and the way our brain interacts with our body changes.”(Amy Fleming)
