INTRODUCTION to the website SEC Gov
You're going to go to the SEC Gov
00:05
website to
egarr you're going to search
00:08
for operating lease, finance, lease,
00:09
you're searching for a 10K and the
00:11
dates will be January 1st of the year to
00:14
whatever date you search for your 10K.
00:16
You're going to type in your company name.
00:20
And search and your 10K
00:22
annual report will pop up.
00:25
You're going to open up the document,
00:28
so here you have a 10K.
00:31
If you go here to the table of contents,
00:34
we're looking for the financial
00:36
statements and supplementary data.
00:38
So you're going to click that and then
00:40
we'll also be using the consolidated
00:42
balance sheet and the notes to
00:44
consolidated financial statements.
00:46
First, we'll go to the
00:47
consolidated balance sheet.
00:48
So here's your balance sheet.
00:50
You have your assets,
00:52
liabilities, stockholders equity.
00:53
You can use these numbers total,
00:55
current total, total,
00:56
stockholders equity and your
00:57
balance sheet might also state your
01:00
operating lease right of use assets.
01:02
Your operating lease liabilities.
01:03
It may even show your finance lease,
01:06
liabilities and finance
01:07
lease right of you assets.
01:09
It will show up for the
01:11
two most previous years,
01:13
so that will be helpful when consulted
01:16
when creating your dashboard.
01:20
So then we're going to go,
01:22
I'm just going to go back up here,
01:24
we're going to go to the notes to
01:27
consolidate financial statements and here
01:28
you are looking for the lease section.
01:31
It might be a little ways down,
01:33
so I'm just going to scroll a bit and
01:36
here we have leases here will tell you all
01:39
the information you should need to know.
01:42
It will have the maturities
01:43
of your operating lease,
01:45
finance lease liabilities.
01:46
If it doesn't do it for every year,
01:49
you can just put zeros because
01:50
they won't be having currently,
01:52
they don't have any future
01:54
payments or maturities for it.
01:56
It will also tell you if the balance sheet
01:58
does not have your finance lease liability.
02:01
Their finances, right?
02:02
Abuse asset numbers.
02:03
You can read the notes and
02:05
it should say it in there.
STEP2
The Debt/Equity Dashboard should include:
1. Bar graph of liabilities vs. stockholders' equity over the last 2 years
2. Line graph of total liabilities, total equity, and debt to equity ratio (using total liabilities) over the last 2 years
3. Pie chart of lease liabilities
4. Stacked area graph of lease liability maturities
5. Pie chart of lease assets (could be gross or net of accumulated amortization depending on company's presentation of lease assets in the financial statements)
STEP3:
Final Submission Requirements: The project will be graded based on the Excel Dashboard submitted (including the underlying data used to create your visualizations) as well as your responses to short answer questions.
QUESTION 1
1. Answer the following in 10-12 sentences.
Discuss the company's financing structure (debt financing versus equity financing) and reference the charts you created. After examining the debt to equity ratio, do you see any long-term solvency issues? Why or why not? Does the financing structure make sense based on the company's industry and operations?
QUESTION 2
1. Answer the following in 10-12 sentences.
What is the difference between an operating lease and finance lease? Which type of lease was primarily used by this company? Does the volume of lease transactions, composition of leased assets, and type of lease primarily used by the company seem reasonable given the company's industry and operations? Discuss.
The Excel Dashboard should include:
1. A worksheet with data from the 10-K. You are only required to include the data that was used to create the charts/graphs.
You are not required to download the 10-K.
2. A dashboard with 5 charts/graphs. Please reference the Dashboard Example provided in the Excel Assignment folder
