Week 8 Additional Information and Corrections

Module 8 - Working with Advanced Functions

During Week 8, you will cover the material in Module 8 – Working with Advanced Functions . This module will cover the IF( ) function, the AND( ) and OR( ) functions, the VLOOKUP( ) function, the IFERROR( ) function, and the COUNTIF( ), SUMIF( ) and AVERAGEIF( ) functions.

Please note the following corrections, additions, and clarifications to the textbook in Module 8:

Page EX467 – The “Written Communication” green box says in the third bulleted item, “For example, formatting fields such as zip codes and Social Security numbers as text…” That is not the ideal way to handle zip codes, Social Security numbers, or phone numbers in Excel. They should be typed as numbers, then formatted with the “Special formats” in the Number Format dialog box. This topic is covered in Appendix A.

Page EX479 #10 – You are to “Position the pointer at the top of cell M1…” That is NOT on the header for column M; it is in the top quarter of cell M1. You get the same mouse pointer shape (a thick down arrow) both places. The difference is, if you click on the header for column M, you will select M1:M1048576, whereas if you click in the top quarter of cell M1, you will select M1:M101. That’s a huge difference.

Page EX509 #4 – The “values with arrow” is the drop-down arrow on the right drop-down list.

Page EX513 – In the last paragraph in the blue box, the formula needs to be =$E2>=10 not =E$2>=10.

Page EX514 – In Figure 8-39, the third example is incorrect. It should be =COUNTIF(J2:J101, “<50000”).

Figure 8-39 – In the second row of that table, the explanation should say “Number of employees in Graham when Graham is the value in cell H3.”
