With the exam coming up next week, I’ve begun to get some questions about the format and what you can do to prepare.

Case Study Exam: The exam involves performing the same types of analysis you are doing on your environmental analysis, but on another company. The company that you will be analyzing is Cloudwyze, a Wilmington based business operating in the digital services space. You should be able to learn most of the relevant information about them by watching a video interview I did with their CEO Shaun Olsen. The company is a B2B company rather than B2C like many of you have been focused on with your projects, but the principles and tools of the class are the same.

Exam Resources / Videos: To view the interview, you can go to the Modules link on the left navigation list. If you scroll down below Module 7, you will now see a Module called “Exam Resources”. Click on that, and you will get to a page to watch the videos.

Exam Format: There will be three “essay” style questions. Topics that make good exam questions include:

Factors that you might include on a Feature/Strategy matrix

Competitive Advantage

Customer Segmentation

Customer Analysis - Needs, Benefits Sought

Variables for a positioning map

Value Proposition

Positioning Statement

Branding

Business Model

Pricing tactics

Place tactics

Open Notes / Open Book: This is the real world, you have access to notes and resources. The key will be how well you apply the concepts and that requires you to actually know the concepts.

Time Allowed: You have two hours to complete the exam. I will actually set the exam setting to 2.5 hours. However, this is just so if something happens and you are a little late, you will still be able to submit the exam. You will receive a late penalty for exams submitted after the two hour time limit allotted.

Taking the exam: When you click on the link to actually take the exam you will be presented with the three essay questions to answer. The exams should be written on your own computer using Microsoft word or another text editor and then uploaded as an attachment to Canvas when you are done. If you use a text editor other than Word, please convert the document to a PDF. All exams must be submitted in Microsoft word or PDF format.

Response Length: Questions can be fully answered with a half page response. All answers should be supported with evidence from the videos or other sources. In a class like this, it is the quality of the support that differentiates an A answer from a B (or C) answer.
