Soundtrack of my Life
Amapola by Andrea Bocelli
The song “Amapola” is a love song in which the artist expresses his immense amount of love and fascination for someone he loves, but how those same feelings are not being reciprocated back to him, and instead “Amapola” would rather be alone.
The song “Amapola” was written in 1920 by spanish composer Jose Maria Lacalle Garcia, and was translated to english several years later by American lyricist Albert Gamse. The song was then performed by a wide variety of artists all across the world and became a classic standard in the genre of ballroom rhumba. Andrea Bocelli gave his operatic rendition in 2006.
When I was growing up, my mom would always play this song, and it was one of the first songs that my brother and I learned. This song came to be one of my favorite songs and I have hundreds of memories and my brother, my mom, and I all singing it together.
The amapola flower is also known as the poppy flower. In addition to being the source of the well known ingredient, poppy seeds, the Papaver somniferum, a species of poppy flower is the source of the crude drug opium.
03’ Adolescence by J. Cole
The song “03’ Adolescence” has a rather strong theme of what it was like struggling through the artist’s teenage years. One of the main things spoken about throughout the song is the lack of a father figure in the artist’s life, and realizing how that has affected him.
The song “03’ Adolescence” was released by rapper J. Cole in his third studio album 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Cole’s album went double platinum with no artist features, It went on to be nominated for Best Rap Album at the 58th Grammy Awards, and won Album of the Year at the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards and Top Rap Album at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards.
When I first listened to J. Cole, this song specifically, I was able to connect and empathize with him. Having lived through similar circumstances, the lack of a father figure and having to be the rock for his mother; the song “03’ Adolescence” gave me a sense that I wasn’t the only one going through these things, giving me a good amount of strength and confidence.
Jermaine Cole (J. Cole) was born in Frankfurt, Germany; raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina; and moved to New York City in 2003 to pursue a career as a musician.
That’s Life by Frank Sinatra
The song “That’s Life” talks about how unpredictable life is. Regardless of in what situation you might find yourself in at the moment, life keeps going on and won't wait up for you no matter what. That’s life.
The song “That’s Life” was released in 1963, having been written by songwriters Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon and first recorded by blues singer Marion Montgomery. The song was widely popularized by Frank Sinatra in 1966 where the song would later climb the charts to become a number-four hit on Billboard’s Hot 100.
I came to love Frank Sinatra and his music during middle school when I was having trouble finding a group of friends I could really fit into. I ended up joining band, learning to play the saxophone and taking a lead part in my schools music as well as drama organization. I later went on to become the lead saxophonist in our school band, got a main role in the schools play, was elected to be the president of the music and drama organization at my school, and was given the honour of singing at my class’s graduation.
The song “That’s Life” appears on 2004 video game Tony Hawk’s Underground 2.
Home by Michael Buble
The song “Home” is about how the artist feels in regards to all the success and excitement that is currently going on in his life and how none of it amounts to the happiness he gets from being home with his loved ones. He expresses how he wants return home.
The song “Home” by Canadian singer Michael Buble was released in 2005 as the second single from his second major-label studio album. At release, the song underperformed massively compared to Michael Buble’s hit “Feeling Good”. Yet over time, the song “Home” ranked up to be #31 in the United Kingdom, and #1 in contemporary in the United States.
“Home” is the song I sang at my middle school graduation knowing that I would soon leave to live in the Dominican Republic. I felt that I was leaving behind everything that made me who I am; my house, my friends, my neighborhood, and quite clearly the school I had grown to love so much. I sang it from the perspective that I had already left and wanted to be back home.
Blake Shelton, a close friend of Michael Buble, released a country version of the song in 2008 with the song reaching #60 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.
Streetcar by Daniel Caesar
The song “Streetcar” is a sad, slow paced song which talks about the artist watching his life pass in front of his eyes but not worrying over it because he knows that what he’s currently dealing with is only temporary. He knows he is on his way to his goals, and will be there soon.
The song “Streetcar”, released in 2015, is a more soft, soulful and polished version of Kanye West’s “Street Lights” which was released in 2008. Kanye West’s original version of the song went by relatively unnoticed compared to many of his other tracks, but Daniel Caesar brought a lot of attention to it when he released his own unique rendition of it. As a young and upcoming singer/songwriter, Daniel Caesar has much to bring and is off to a good start.
“Streetcar” gave me a lot to think about after I had moved to Dominican Republic. I felt quite lost as to what my life was to become. When stuck during a time in which I needed to find out who I was, this song was a source of reflection which I found myself “vibing out” to.
It is said that many of Kanye’s greatest songs have the word “lights” in it, suggesting that “Street Lights” is another one of Kanye’s classics, alongside “Flashing Lights” and “All of the Lights”.
Say Amen by Panic! At The Disco
The song “Say Amen” is about enjoying life by living it to the fullest. That there's no way you can be upset of where you are in life knowing that you gave it your all. To express yourself by exclusively being who you know you are and not changing for anyone.
The song “Say Amen” was released in 2018 as the lead single for Panic! At the Disco’s new album Pray for the Wicked. It quickly received immense amounts of attention for its action packed music video and rocketed up the charts becoming Panic! At the Disco’s first song to reach #1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs.
To me, the song “Say Amen” represents the moment in my life in which I truly accepted myself and my life for how it was and I really began to enjoy my life in the Dominican Republic. When listening to this song I’m overwhelmed with a feeling of being completely impervious to the troubles and worries that are on my shoulders, slowing me down.
The music video of “Say Amen” is the prequel to the band’s previous music videos for the songs: “This is Gospel” (2013) and “Emperor's New Clothes” (2015), marking the end of a 5-year music video storytelling project for Panic! At the Disco.
Hakuna by Lo Blanquito
The song “Hakuna” is different from most songs in that it is quirky in a positive way, it is a song about having fun and playfully talking about partying, chilling out, and being “wild”.
The song “Hakuna” was released in 2018 a few months after the immense success of the groups hit song “Telacuti” which reached #1 on Dominican Republic’s Top 100 on Spotify and stayed there for several weeks. Just a few months after the group’s initial musical success, they were signed by well known record label, Sony Music.
When listening to “Hakuna” I’m reminded of the love I’ve grown to have for Dominican Republic and all of its cultural differences, especially it’s music. When first having moved to there I hated the food, the people, the music, and just about everything about it. I had a very negative view of what life was like there, but with time I came to realize that it was much better than what I was giving it credit for. I now have a much more positive outlook not only on how it was like living in the Dominican Republic, but on life in general.
The musical group “Lo Blanquito” is comprised of a group of Dominican undergraduate university students who attend one of the most prestigious Universities in the country.
