Philosophy of Classroom Management

I believe that classroom management is a vital component of being an effective and excellent teacher. A classroom will not be successful if it is not managed in an organized, well-planned, and consistent manner. Classroom management encompasses many different aspects of the classroom such as classroom layout, planning, expectations, instructional activities, and communication with students. I feel that without good classroom management, an effective and thriving learning environment simply cannot exist. I feel that how a teacher manages his or her classroom is a direct reflection on their skills as an educator. An effective teacher is one who comes to class knowledgeable, prepared, and with a plan.

Classroom management is important in the process of teaching and learning because it sets the stage on which the lesson will be presented and it establishes the structure and dynamic of the class as well. I believe that a classroom should be a warm, inviting place filled with support, encouragement, acceptance, and learning while still establishing a sense of order, discipline, and control. By structuring a well-organized classroom that has a clear set of rules and expectations, this type of classroom climate is made possible.

The teacher’s responsibility in classroom management should be to set these rules and expectations and follow through with consequences when they are not met and incentives when they are. I also feel that the teacher should maintain a clean, not cluttered learning environment. The student’s role is to follow the rules and expectations laid out before them. The management of the class should be effective and support the environment of learning established and should also be clear to the students and also to the families of the students.

Overall, I feel that teachers who are prepared and have a set plan in place for all aspects of the classroom and have established a supportive relationship with their students and families, will be more successful in aiding students in reaching their fullest potential.

Classroom Motto

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!” –Dr. Seuss

I chose this class motto because I feel that it is saying that it doesn’t matter how you think even if it is different than someone else, it only matters that you try.

First Day Plans

According to Wong, “What you do on the first days of school will determine your success or failure for the rest of the school year”. With that being said, I believe that having a structure and plan already established well in advance will be the key to starting of the school year successfully. In order for me to be successful and organized, I plan to follow Wong’s advice and script the first day of school.

In this script, I plan to begin the day by introducing myself to the students. I will let the students know about my personal life (husband, two children) as well as my education background, hobbies, and interests. I feel that this will begin to establish a connection between myself and the students. I also plan to have an opening activity for the students in order for me to get to know them as individuals and for them to get to know their peers.

After all of the introductions have been made, I plan to let the students know of my expectations of them in both the classroom and the school. I plan to go over all rules and expectations, as well as, school policies. I will also ask for feedback from the students on the expectations that they have for me. I plan to discuss all class rules and procedures thoroughly, making sure that all students understand what is expected of them and why it is important that they follow these rules and expectations. I plan for my expectations to be positive because I want to create a warm, inviting classroom environment where all students feel as though they are a part of a community within the classroom walls. I also plan to go over the safety procedures during the first days of class. I feel that it is very important for the students to know and understand exactly what is expected of them in all circumstances throughout the school day.

Not only will I have a complete classroom management plan in place but I will also make sure that I am dressed professionally. According to Wong “Effective teachers know that the clothes they wear and the smile that dresses their face are the first things students see when they are greeted at the door”. Overall, I plan to inspire the students to be the best that they can be starting on day one. I plan to hold them accountable for this consistently. I feel that doing this will determine how successful I will be as a teacher.

Physical Design of Classroom

Large Group Instruction

During my large group instruction, I plan to have all students sitting on a rug on the floor facing where I am teaching for most of the lessons. I feel that this will encourage the students to stay focused on the message that I am presenting them. I also plan to have a small white board for each student to use during this instruction for either working problems out or responding to the lesson. I hope that by having it set up this way, distractions will be kept to a minimum or even eliminated. I plan to place students who require extra attention closer to me in order to keep them on task.

Small Group Instruction

I plan to have my students in assigned groups, in order to prevent any confusion on who they are supposed to be working with. I will probably allow each group to vote on a group name from a list of choices that I provide or I will let them draw a name depending on the time constraints. I plan to either place arrows on the floor or have a specific system in place to let students know which direction they are to move when changing centers or activities. I also plan to have a signal in place to indicate when transition time is approaching and when it is time to transition to the next activity. During this time, I will be working with one group. I plan for us to sit in a circle either on a small rug or at a small table. Periodically throughout this, I will walk around to the groups to ensure that they are staying on task.

Discipline Plan

Rules and Expectations

Classroom Rules & Examples of behaviors:

· Be Ready

· Come to class on time and ready to learn.

· Be prepared by having all necessary materials.

· Have a positive attitude.

· Be Respectful

· Be kind and encouraging to others.

· Be a good listener.

· Raise your hand before speaking or getting out of your seat.

· Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

· Follow directions the first time.

· Be Responsible

· Stay on task.

· Make good choices even when no one is watching.

· Take responsibility for your own learning.

Implementing these Rules:

I plan let the students help with making these rules and expectations. I will ask the students to give me some examples of what kinds of behaviors each rule covers. I will take their answers, turn them into a positive statement and include them under the appropriate rule. I will also ask the students if there are any additional rules that should be included in our list that does not fit into one of the three categories that I have chosen.

I will express the expectations that I have for my students by modeling appropriate behavior. I will also be consistent in implementing these rules and expectations. I will have positive expectations for both my students and myself. I will set a classroom environment in which all students are encouraged and EXPECTED to succeed. I will maintain this environment through positive affirmations and praise.

Rewards/ Incentives

I plan to implement the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program in my classroom.

Steps:

· Set up a Choice Binder with Free things.

· Possible list of Rewards:

· Skip morning work

· Use the teacher’s chair

· Eat lunch with the teacher and a friend

· Homework pass

· Pick your own partner pass

· Sit next to your friend for a day

· Write in pen for the day

· Sit on the floor with a pillow

· Chew gum for 30 minutes

· Teacher cleans and organizes your desk

· 15 minutes of computer time

· No shoes for the day

· Sit at the teacher’s desk

· Pick a prize from the treasure chest

· Late work pass

· Teacher’s helper for the day

· Pick a job for the day

· Sharpen your pencil at any time

· Sit anywhere you like

· Read a book to the class

· Possible Positive Behaviors

· Perfect Behavior (not moving card)

· Clean Desk

· Being kind to others

· Being respectful

· Being on task

· Making good choices

· When the student is seen demonstrating a positive behavior, they are given a ticket. They write their name on the back of the ticket and place it in the front of their consequence chart. At the end of the day, if the students card is on yellow (Step 2-discipline) then they must give me one ticket back. All other tickets will be placed in a raffle jar. The teacher’s helper will draw a winner from the jar (one for every day) at the end of the week.

· The winners will get to choose an incentive from the Choice Binder. To prevent stealing, the teacher will sign her name and write the students name on the back of the card using a dry-erase marker or sharpie. When the student cashes in their incentive, the teacher can simply wipe off the card and place it back into the Binder.

I would also like to set up class incentives.

· Every time that a student places a ticket in the raffle jar they also get to place a marble in the class incentive jar. I will mark the jar with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% levels. At the end of the month the class will get to vote on a prize that is based on the level that the class is at. In order for the choice to be made, 75% of the class must vote on it.

· How the percentage levels work:

· 25%- Choose one incentive from the list

· 50%- Choose two incentives from the list

· 75%- Choose three incentives from the list

· 100%- Choose four incentives from the list

· List of possible incentives:

· No Homework For a Day

· Extra Recess

· Play a game

· Popcorn

· Extra 15 minutes of computer time

· Show and tell

· Music in the classroom

Consequences

Students will move a clip up or down on the behavior chart depending on their behavior.

Levels on Chart:

· Star Student

· Good Choices

· Ready to Learn

· Think About It

· Teacher’s Choice

At the “Star Student” level, students will be given two tickets.

At the “Good Choices” level, students will be given one ticket.

Students will begin the day on the “Ready to Learn” level.

At the “Think about It” level, students will have to complete the “Think Sheet” (provided on next page).

At the “Teacher’s Choice” level, teacher will determine what steps are to be taken. This can include the following:

· Walking at recess

· Think about it sheet

· Parent contact

· Extra Homework

· Worst possible scenario: Trip to the Office

Procedures and Routines for:

Entering the Classroom

The Environment:

· I plan to stand at the classroom door with a smile on my face ready to great each student every day. On the first day, I will tell the students that I am glad to meet them and introduce myself to them.

· I will have all classroom information posted on the door for at least the first week of school. This will include:

· My name

· Room Number

· Grade Level

· Welcome or Greeting

· I will have the students names placed on their desks or on a seating chart on the first day of school. This chart may change after every student has arrived.

How students will enter the room:

· Students will enter the room in a quiet and calm manner. Students will calmly go and put their things away and go to their seat to begin morning work.

· Any student who does not follow this procedure when entering the classroom will be asked to return to the door and enter appropriately using the following steps recommended by Wong:

· Ask the student to return to the door.

· Tell the student why.

· Give directions for correctly entering the room.

· Check for understanding.

· Acknowledge the understanding.

Starting Bell Work

Entering the classroom

· Students will enter the classroom in the appropriate manner.

· Students will put away all belongings and attend to any morning routines such as marking themselves present or choosing a lunch item for the day.

· Student will then go to their seats and quietly begin bell work.

Beginning Bell work:

· The teacher will have the morning Bell Work Assignment posted on the board every day. This consistency will ensure that:

· The students have assignments.

· The students know where to find the assignments.

· The students know why they are to do the assignment.

· Assignment directions such contain all directions to prevent confusion. I plan to use bell work as a review for the previous day’s work. The following is a possible assignment format from Wong:

· Title of Assignment (such as Spelling)

· Directions

· Number your paper from 1 to 15.

· Take a practice spelling test.

· Exchange papers with your spelling partner.

· Correct Tests.

· Write words missed five times each.

· Bell work will begin as soon as the student arrives. Bell work will end three to five minutes after the announcements are complete.

Quieting the Class

I plan to quiet my class using the method recommended by Wong: Teach, Rehearse, and Reinforce. I want to use the Give Me Five strategy.

Teach:

· I will explain to the students that I have a procedure for when I want their undivided attention. I will stand with one hand raised showing five fingers and I will say “Give me Five”. When you hear this, you will go through the following five steps in your mind:

· Eyes on speaker.

· Quiet

· Be Still

· Hands free (Put down anything that may be in your hands)

· Listen.

· In addition, you will count out the five seconds and at the end you should be quietly seated at your desk ready to listen.

· I will repeat this procedure several times for the students

Rehearse:

· I will then have the students rehearse this procedure. I will let them know that we will be using this in order for us to work together more effectively this school year.

· I will continue to rehearse this procedure until it is done correctly. I will also praise the students who are correctly carrying out this procedure.

Reinforce:

· I will use this procedure consistently in order for the students to follow it. I will also praise and encourage the students in order for them to follow this procedure correctly.

Taking Roll

I do not plan take roll in my classroom by calling out names at the beginning of each day. Instead I plan to have a chart, next to the lunch chart where students will mark that they are present upon arrival.

Entering the classroom:

· The students will enter the classroom in the appropriate manner. The student will mark that he or she is present on the chart by the door as well as, what they are going to be eating for lunch that day.

· The student will then carry on with the rest of their morning routine.

Taking Role- The teachers Responsibility:

· After all students are seated I will scan the classroom to ensure that every one is accounted for.

· I will then mark the attendance sheet using the chart and my classroom scan.

· At the end of the day, I will have a student who is assigned (their classroom job) to move all of the pins from the chart back to their original position in order to prepare for the next day.

Notes from Home

Turning in Notes from Home:

· I will have a basket in a designated area of the classroom where students can turn in notes from home.

· I will place this basket next to the spot where students turn in homework to ensure that they do not forget to turn them in.

Reading notes from home:

· I will read the notes as soon as possible, probably during the teacher planning period if time permits. I will also respond to the notes in a timely manner, if they require a response.

Filing notes from Home:

· I will have a special parent contact folder/binder set up. I will record all communication with parents and family members in this folder.

· I will place the note from home in this binder, filed under each individual student.

· I will also make a copy of any note that I sent out to parents in response. (This may be in written or email form).

· I will also take notes of and in-person or phone communication in this binder.

Student Paper Headings

I plan to have “Mail Boxes” Set up in my classroom for students to turn their work in. Group work will be placed in the group leader’s mail box. Younger students will also utilize the mail boxes and the paper heading listed below depending on their developmental level. If they are unable to use the heading below, then they may be asked to just put their name and number or even just their number.

Individual Students

Headings:

· I will teach my students that I would like them to use the following format at the top of their page when turning papers in:

Title of Assignment Date Name & Student Number

Turning in assignments:

· I will have the students turn their assignments into their assigned box inside the classroom, after completing the assignments.

Group Work

Headings:

· I will have the students use the following format at the top of their page when turning group assignments in:

Title of Assignment Date Name of Group Leader & Student Number

Group Members Names & Student Numbers

Turning in Assignments:

· The assigned group leader will be responsible for turning in the group’s assignment in the group leader’s box. The group leader will also ensure that all group members’ names are listed on the assignment.

Restroom Break

I plan to have my students take restroom breaks in between activities, and probably class/ subject changes. I also plan to have students use a particular hand gesture to notify me when they need to use the restroom, in order to decrease class distractions.

Feeling Sick

I plan to keep some medical supplies in my classroom, such as a thermometer, Band-Aids, ice packs, and other quick solution items. I plan to check student’s temperature in class. I will use a buddy system as far as sending students to the office. I do not plan to call parents of sick children during class times, as I feel this would be too distracting.

Sharpening pencils

I plan to have a “Sharpened” bucket and a “Broken” bucket for pencils in class. I will not allow students to sharpen pencils in class. I will assign sharpening pencils as a classroom job. I will have the student in charge of sharpening pencils take care of that in the afternoons, maybe 2-3 times a week. I will supply extra pencils for all students. They will be allowed to go get pencils as needed.

Throwing Trash Away

I plan to have trash buckets at each student pod for them to use during lessons. I will assign a student with the job of emptying the garbage and cleaning the paper off of the floor. This student will empty the buckets a few times throughout the day. Students will not be allowed to put garbage in their desks. We will probably have weekly desk checks.

Signal to Get Their Attention

I plan to get the students attention by turning off the lights. I feel that this is a good way to gain their attention. I also feel that is a very calming way to transition from one activity to another. If necessary, I will also use the “give me five” hand signals.

Housekeeping Chores

I plan to assign classroom jobs to the students. I would really like to let the students “apply” for their positions. I will provide a list of class jobs that will include the following: librarian, pencil sharpener, class organizer (cleaning), technician, teacher helper, paper passer, line leader, greeter, etc. I will allow the students to choose their top three jobs choices, and to explain why they feel that they are qualified for the position. I will try to rotate these positions every quarter, or sooner if necessary.

Transition from One Class to Another

I plan to use the lights off signal to gain students attention for class changes. I will have students return to their desk. I plan to use move to learn in between class changes as a way to refocus and engage my students. If outside of the classroom, I will have the class helpers pick up supplies to bring back to the classroom.

Dismissal

I plan to have students read during dismissal time. This time can become chaotic very quickly, therefore I feel that using a “quiet” activity will help with this. I will probably allow students to read in a group or read out loud to a group during this time. I will not give worksheets because I do not want to give more work to some students just because they do not leave as soon as others. Also, the students will be taught that the bell does not dismiss the class, the teacher dismisses the class. Students will be dismissed when called upon.

Homework Policy

· I plan to assign less than thirty minutes worth of homework for Monday-Wednesday nights (unless I am teaching a lower grade). I will have students use Thursday nights for test review.

· I plan to send all of the weekly homework assignments home with the students the Friday before they are due. I will check each assignment daily as the students are working on bell work. I will have them place their homework open on their desk for me to access quickly. I will have them place a red card on their desk if they forgot to do their homework.

I have seen several homework practices in the different labs that I have been in. I really liked one of the practices that I saw. In this particular classroom, the students placed their homework in drawers labeled Monday-Friday. The teacher checked all of the homework at the end of the week. The only downside of this is that the teacher is unable to see if a student turned homework in late because they have access to all drawers all week.

Turn it in or Keep it in Notebook

· I plan to send all of the weekly homework assignments home with the students the Friday before they are due. I will check each assignment daily as the students are working on bell work. I will have them place their homework open on their desk for me to access quickly. I will have them place a red card on their desk if they forgot to do their homework. On Thursday, the students will turn in their completed homework packet or I will allow the students to trade and grade homework packets as I go over them.

· I plan to give students a weekly homework grade. Each homework assignment will count as a part of their overall grade. For instance, if there are four homework assignments (one for each day, Monday-Thursday) and each assignment is five points. The total weekly grade will be 20 points.

· I will not have the students

Motivators/ Rewards (for completing it)

· I plan to give students two bonus points on their end of week test for everyday that they complete their homework. This will be a maximum of eight bonus points each week. The students can receive an additional two points if their parents sign their homework packet. Therefore the students can earn up to ten bonus points towards their test each week.

· I may also allow students to receive a prize at the end of the month for not missing a homework assignment for that month.

Consequences (for not doing it)

· I do not plan to have specific consequences for not completing homework other than not receiving the benefits of completing it, which include the following:

· Daily/Weekly homework grade

· Bonus points on test

· End of month prize

· If a student is habitually not completing homework, a parent phone or face to face conference will take place. At this point the parent will be REQUIRED to sign the student’s homework packet every day to insure that the assignments are being completed.

How to Get Work When Absent

· I plan to place a “We’ve missed you folder” on the desk of every student on the day that they are absent. As papers are passed out throughout the day, a copy of each will be placed into this folder. At the end of the day, the folder will either be placed in the student’s desk or cubby depending on the room setup.

· The student will have until the Monday after to complete all missed assignments. This will give the student ample time over the weekend to work on these assignments.

· If the student misses multiple days in a row, then the teacher will decide what is to be completed.

Bulletin Board Ideas

Informational

I will have an information bulletin board inside of the classroom next to the door. This board will have the homework list, as well as, any other vital announcements or information for the students. I will have our class rules displayed on a bulletin board in a very visible location.

Philosophical

I plan to keep my philosophical bulletin boards to a minimum. I will probably only have one or two in the class that represent what our class stands for.

Curricular

I plan to only hang curricular bulletins or posters that are relevant to what the students are doing at the time. Writing boards will stay up all year, since students will need to quickly access these for most assignments.

Show-off

I will have one show off board for the class. This board will be topped with the standard that this work met in the form of an “I can” statement. I will display this work outside of the classroom. This work will represent the main focus of our lesson for the month or nine weeks. This will most likely be a writing activity/assignment.

Field Trip Procedures

Before the field trip, I will go over rules and procedures for the field trip. I will have the student line up in order of their class numbers. I will then have the students call out the numbers starting from one to ensure that everyone is accounted for. I will ask parents that attend the field trip to assist but I will still hold all responsibility for the student’s. If my class does not have matching shirts, then I will ask the parents to send the kids in a specific color shirt for the day of the field trip. This will help to recognize my students in a timely manner.

Parent and Community Involvement

I plan to hold a meeting with my parents at the end of every semester. I will use this time to allow the parents to voice their concerns and suggestions. I also plan to have monthly conferences with each students parents (either by phone or face to face depending on which is more convenient for them.) I will send home a note that states the topics that we will be learning over the next few weeks and if the parents have any experience or knowledge on that topic (ex. It’s their career) they will be invited to come and share it with the class. I will also try to get community workers to come and visit the classroom and speak on various topics as a way to engage the students while teaching them about their community.

Contact Ideas for Phone Calls and Conferences

I plan to have a conference with the parent(s) of each of my students every month. This will either be done through phone calls or face-to-face conferences depending on which is most convenient for the parent. I will keep a log of all notes, emails, phone calls, and face-to-face meetings that I have with the parents. I will keep and maintain and parent contact binder.

Instructional Planning

When planning for instruction, I am going to have my lessons written out at least the week before I am going to teach them. I am going to plan my lessons focused on one goal which is student learning. I plan to write assignments that demonstrate that student learning, comprehension, and mastery have taken place. I plan to align the curriculum that I am teaching with the required state standards. I will write my lesson with clear objectives that help students anticipate, focus, and understand the purpose of the lesson.

Grading Policy

· Grading

· I plan to grade students at least weekly on all subjects. I also plan to grade student’s mid-way through the nine weeks and again at the end. After giving the student an assessment, I will grade the assessment. If the student misses the questions, I will inform the student where to find the correct answer, and give the students a chance to locate the correct answer. I will not re-grade the assignment, however I will over bonus work if they student is willing to re-test on similar questions to the ones he or she previously missed. I will not grade on a curve. I want all of my students to succeed, and not just barely pass thanks to others who are succeeding.

· Late work

· I will only accept late work if a valid excuse is provided. The validity of the excuse will be determined by the teacher.

· Extra Credit

· I will offer extra credit assignments that I feel will provide the students with additional practice of skills that they are lacking.
