Perceptions of Police Use of Force

Dr. Reardon

Problem

Publicized instances of force raise questions about police tactics

Prior Research

Impact of race

Study A (cite) – short summary of study

Study B (cite) – short summary of study

Resistance

Study A (cite) – short summary of study

Study B (cite) – short summary of study

Current Study

Research question

How do suspect race and resistance impact perceptions of police use of force?

Research Need

No prior research has looked at these two variables together in the same study

Hypotheses

H1: Participants will perceive greater use of force when the suspect is Black than when the suspect is White

H2: Participants will perceive greater use of force when the suspect does not resist than when the suspect resists

H3: Suspect race and resistance will interact such that participants will perceive greater force when there is no resistance compared to resistance for both Black and White suspects, but this difference will be larger for Black suspects

Proposed Method

Participants

Potential jurors recruited from people called for jury duty at the Indiana County Courthouse

Design

2 (Suspect race: White vs. Black) X 2 (Resistance: Present vs. Absent) between subjects design

Proposed Method

Procedure and Materials

Setting – Indiana County Courthouse

Consent form

Read through summary of altercation – summary contains manipulations of suspect race and resistance

Questionnaire – measure perceptions of police use of force, perceptions of the suspect, perceptions of the police officer

7 point Likert scales

Debriefing

Proposed Analysis

Factorial ANOVA

Impact of suspect race and resistance on perceptions of force

Simple effects analysis if needed

Independent samples t test
