List the title of your scenario- BAECE- male child playing in home living center, upset father who does not want him playing with dolls and dress up.

NAEYC standard 2- curriculum: 

"Children are given opportunities to learn and develop through exploration and play, and teachers have opportunities to work with individual children and small groups on specific skills.

 Materials and equipment spark children’s interest and encourage them to experiment and learn.

 Activities are designed to help children get better at reasoning, solving problems, getting along with others, using language, and developing other skills." (NAEYC) 

Respond to the following question:

Why did you choose the standard you did?- I chose this standard because it seemed like the best for for the scenario. I feel it would really counter and explain some of the things the father was feeling. 

Describe the steps you would take to solve this problem.-

I would share the standards with the father, and try and be as kind, and respectful as I can. This may be a subject that is sensitive for him.

Create an ethical scenario of your own that pertains to your field of study for your peers to solve-

A lead teacher is often placing a heavy workload on you, the assistant. She is leaving many of her responsibility for you to handle, when you do not have the same qualifications, pay or hours. How do you, the assistant handle this?

BAECE- Father doesn't want son to play in Kitchen area

Professional Standard

Standard 7- Families

“The program establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with each child’s family to foster children’s development in all settings. These relationships are sensitive to family composition, language, and culture. To support children’s optimal learning and development, programs need to establish relationships with families based on mutual trust and respect, involve families in their children’s educational growth, and encourage families to fully participate in the program” (NAEYC).

 

Professional Standard: Explanation

The reason I choose Standard 7 – Families is because it is important for teachers and parents to build a relationship of trust and honesty. As a Professional Educator it is important to acknowledge each family’s culture, language, and belief while making them feel welcomed and respected. Once a teacher gains the parent trust any issue can be resolved with respect and professionally.

Solution

The first thing I would do in this case tell the parent that I respect their belief and their culture but I am not allowed to deprived a child of playing in any area. Then I would ask if they are willing to have a Parent/Teacher conference. If so I would set the conference and have parent sign the Parent/Teacher Conference request Form. If parent still not satisfy, then I would encourage parent to speak to my supervisor. At the Parent/Teacher Conference I would provide parent with resource of why children are not to be deprive for playing in a certain area or with a certain toys. I would also provide our policy and procedures. I would teach the parent that a boy playing with a doll would teach the boy how to be a great father. I would teach the parents that most chefs are male and they cook amazing. Allowing a boy play in the kitchen area would teach them to learn how to be independent, great chefs and it would build self-esteem. I would teach the parents that each classroom areas play an important role in their child development. I would also show the parents the kitchen area so they can see that in this area children dress up like police officers, fire fighters, doctors and other community services. The kitchen area is not decorated in a girly way that instead they will feel like if they are at home. The children will learn sharing, social interaction, independence, and how to use their imagination.  This solution applies to the professional standard I selected because we use an effective communication with parents while building trust, and allow parents to be involved in making positive choice for their child developmental learning. It’s about working with parents as a team.

 

Ethical Scenario

Mrs. Garcia teaches the Infant and Toddler class. She has 8 children and shares the responsibility with her co-worker who is another Teacher in the classroom. Since the beginning of school they had a child who was constantly sneezing and having a lot of mucus coming out of her nose. Mrs. Garcia asked the child mother if the child had allergies and parent said no. The child had the same issue for a couple of weeks. Mrs. Garcia and her co-worker thought that is not normal for a child to have runny nose the way this child had. The Teachers spoke to the supervisor and they had to do a Health Alert to get to the bottom of this issue. The parent got mad and curse-out the teachers.  A month later the child had to go to the hospital because of the child had a sinus virus and it was contagious. How would you handle this and what would you do next?

Mr. Jones does not was his son Caleb to play in the kitchen area of the classroom because of cultural reasons. 

· Copy and paste the specific professional standard that will help you solve this ethical dilemma.

· Why did you choose the standard you did?

Mr. Jones takes about no wanting Caleb to play in the kitchen area because it is against his religion. The standard states we maintain the family relationship to foster learning with the family's culture in mind. If this is his culture then we need to respect it. 

· Describe the steps you would take to solve this problem.

I would first meet with the family along with the other teachers in the classroom and the supervisor. I would listen to the parents and hear everything they have to say. Then, I would explain to them the advantages his child will gain from playing in this area. Such as parent skills and pretend play.  He can also gain many skills along with the language, communication, and social-emotional skills he would lose out on. Then we would together and discuss an outcome for Caleb keeping in mind all the rules and regulations and the family's culture and requests. 

· Create an ethical scenario of your own that pertains to your field of study for your peers to solve. Be sure that your scenario is detailed enough so that your peers from a different field of study can understand the situation and problem solve.

Mr. Smith is upset that his son does not want to go to school because he is saying that he is getting picked on by other children? When you observe the children it is actually Mr. Smith's child causing the issues at school and picking fights.
