Public Speaking 4-wk. (or 15-wk.) Final Informative Outline
General Purpose: To inform.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Oral Hygiene.
Central Idea: Three of the main things that are important in good Oral hygiene are proper brushing and flossing, eating healthy, and going to the dentist.
I. Introduction.
A. Attention – Are you proud of your smile? Or do you refuse to show your teeth? We’ve all seen or known people whose teeth are brown or yellow and smell bad. You may even see many people out there that are missing a bunch of teeth because their teeth were so unhealthy that they fell out. Show visual aid- (American Dental Association) It doesn’t have to be that way!
B. Preface.
1. Today I will inform you on how to properly take care of your teeth.
2. I will discuss the importance of brushing and flossing, eating healthy, and going to the dentist and how it effects how healthy your teeth are.
(includes Central Idea and previews main points)
(TRANSITION) Now that we know what the steps are, let’s go over how to execute them.
II. Body.
A. Brushing and Flossing
1. Brushing is the most common way of removing surface plaque. Brush twice a day for two minutes. (Colgate.com)
2. Flossing is also important to remove plaque. It removes the bacteria that is hiding in between the teeth and along the gum line in places that the toothbrush can’t reach. (Modern Dental Assisting textbook)
(TRANSITION) The next important step isn’t quite as obvious as the first.
B. Eating Healthy
1. Patients should limit sugary snacks between meals and eat a healthy diet that limits added sugars and high-acid foods. (American Dental Association)
2. Sugary foods such as candy produce acid that causes cavities. (lecture in Dental Health, Mrs. Bosarge)
(TRANSITION) If you do end up with a cavity, the right place to go is the dentist.
C. Visiting the dentist
1. It is important to visit the dentist twice a year or every six months. (Oral-B)
2. The dentist will fill your cavities and make you aware of any other problems you may not know about. (Westerville Dental)
(TRANSITION) Visiting the dentist wraps up all that we have been over.
