For your applied project, here is what I am hoping to get from you within the next day or two:

1. A draft version of your description of one of the courses you took and what you learned and how that applied to your internship.  I will give you feedback on that for you to integrate into your applied project final paper.

2. In your final paper, use the format I recommended for each of the courses you took.  So, the course # and title in bold as a sub-heading.  Then, under the sub-heading, copy of the course description from the catalog, using a smaller font to differentiate it from the text of your paper.  Then for each course a paragraph or two that describes on of the key learnings from the course.  These should be a learning related to the main concepts of the course.  You should rely on the course description and your course syllabi to help you determine what that learning would be.  Give a specific example of that key learning that shows us that you actually do know about the learning  you describe.  The example could be a description of some specific element of that key learning or an activity you did in the course that applied that learning.  In a second paragraph or two describe how that learning applied in your internship.  This should also include something specific that shows how you applied the learning.  This could be a specific task you performed or a way of thinking that you brought to the internship that helped you in your overall approach to the internship.

ISS 518:  Science, Technology, and Social Systems

Course Description:  Issues, definitions and literature involved in the study of science, technology and the evolution of social systems, emphasizing contemporary issues confronting modern societies and potential solutions to resolving these issues. (ASU Course Catalog)

I learned … with an example or detail that explains the learning.  For example, perhaps you learned the importance of being able to differentiate between societal level norm and individual norms then you might give an example of each type of norm.

I applied that learning in my internship in the following way(s) . . .

3. Work with Jesse on any needed changes to the first part of your paper:  The description of your internship and a general introduction to the section on your individual classes.  He has given  you feedback on that introductory section to the final paper already so find out from  him what else he needs/wants from  you.

4. Find out from Jesse when he wants to see a final version of your paper so that he and I along with Dr. Hollinger  have time to grade it.

5. Prepare your public presentation of your final paper.  At that presentation,  you will discuss each course and briefly describe what you learned in that course and how it applied to the internship.  Please do not simply read your paper at the presentation. You should have brief notes, bullet points, that remind you of the items you want to discuss for each course.  You should be thinking in terms of a presentation that lasts about 20 minutes, so that’s about 2-3 minutes per course at the most.  Please practice your presentation out loud at least one time so you are not trying to do the final presentation for the first time when you do it for us and anyone else who attends that meeting.

6. Check with Jesse to find out what criteria the final grade for your applied project will be based on.  What % for your paper and what % for your presentation and what the criteria we will use will be for each.  I don’t know what is required so he will be the right person to ask about that.
