Part 1

Choose 3 cities (or areas) to investigate for employment and living. Organize materials below by city names: 1. Provide ALL backup documentation in appendices (Xeroxes or printouts of sources should be neatly labeled and presented

in an organized fashion in order to receive credit). 2. Include the following information as a minimum for each city or area:

a. Demographics (average age, male to female ratio, ethnic groups, etc.); b. Housing (available types that YOU would consider, associated costs, locations, rent or purchase, distance to

possible employment, etc.) c. A list of five possible employers with complete contact information d. Evidence of current employment opportunities in interior design or related area (interior design or related

employment opportunities from online or print sources) e. Professional ID or related organizations ‐ local chapters: current activities, contact information for officers,

example of recent meeting announcement etc. f. Child Care, Older adult care, schools, etc. if anticipated to be applicable for dependents g. Professional interior design registration, certification and/or licensing information h. Current continuing Education opportunities (continuing education units, seminars, Grad. School, etc.) i. Health‐related information (hospitals, clinics), wellness centers, sports, gyms etc.; j. Street maps/area maps.

3. Produce an estimated itemized, annual expense projection for entry level interior design position in one of your selected areas or an average of your selected areas in spread sheet format. Include line item pricing for:

a. Personal expenses (groceries, rent, health and life insurance, entertainment etc.) b. Profession‐related expenses (professional organization dues, transportation to/from work, professional clothing,

etc.) 4. Determine Cost of Living (calculated with a program such as those shown below) comparison and compare this to your

anticipated starting salary range for the selected cities/areas. Note: http://goo.gl/HKTMgV The median expected salary for a typical (not necessarily entry level) Interior Designer I in the United States is $37,850.

5. What other estimates of entry level salaries can you find? Include these. You may contact faculty, alumni, or search interior design publications or organization data bases or other sources. Note: There are some interactive sites available to calculate cost of living. Here are 2 that you may try:

 http://goo.gl/a7AIXn Show all of your work. Document all of your searches with printouts in an appendix. Include a reference list in an appendix. Clearly label all items. Provide a table of contents.

6. Based on the materials provide above, write a concise summary comparison about the implications of working as a design professional in your selected cities or areas. Your summary must be in the form of a spread sheet (vertical and horizontal outlines of cells should be in evidence to aid readability, comparison and organization.)

Part 2

1. Produce a spell‐checked, grammar‐checked and fact‐checked complete draft of your resume to date, 1 – 2 pages maximum. Include a separate one page list of references with contact information (Academic, professional or non‐profit organization representatives ‐persons not related to you.)
