Synthesis of Research-Based Findings

In order to prepare for a synthesis of research findings in response to a problem in my professional practice, I had to first identify the problem. After identifying my problem as the location of research-based strategies to best meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) as a fifth-grade mainstream English Language Arts teacher. Next, I used the Capella University library to locate peer-reviewed research articles conducted within the past five years that related to my problem.

The next stages of the synthesis process are more challenging and, frankly, overwhelming for me. Since many of the research articles are rather lengthy, I cannot justify printing them out. I would love nothing more than to sit somewhere cozy with my printed-out copies, sticky notes, a highlighter, and multi-colored pens to analyze the information presented within these articles and evaluate their transferability to the problem I identified within my professional practice. Instead, I will unwillingly navigate through screens of research while making notes using index cards. The index cards will be used to make note of pertinent information while keeping track of the resource in which it was obtained. In addition, I will be able to sort through my cards to be sure that I have included all of the necessary information to meet the requirements for this assignment. The index cards will also enable me to identify common themes or patterns within the research studies and findings.

Lastly, I will utilize the knowledge that I have gained throughout this course to analyze the transferability of the article's research. In the past, I would not have bothered to review the population size or sampling. I would not have looked for bias on the part of the researcher. Previously, I would have read through the research articles until I simply found ideas that I could implement in my own classroom. I would have been proud of myself for locating research-based strategies. I know that I have a large task ahead of me, but I feel as though I am more equipped to complete this task due to the knowledge I have gained.
