Question 1: The Painting of Modern Life

The Rouen Cathedral-painted by Monet, was done at several times through the day at several points of light from the sun. This series captured different light hues that were only present during certain times of the day.  Impressionism is about catching the sun hues at different levels.  Monet did that very well. (Academy/Smarthistory, Monet, Rouen Cathedral, 2016)

Manet, Folies-Bergere-Paintin of a tavern of a barkeep.  In the background is shows a spectacle depicting a mirror.  So, upon looking at the woman, the spectacle looks like its behind you.  The symbol of the mirror saying that it may not be totally truthful.  The man shows signs of jealousy, apprehension, anxiety which are all fleeting moments that are gone in a minute.  The impressionism of time speed. (Academy/Smarthistory, Manet, A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, 2017)

Seurat, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte-Georges Seurat calculated the exact hues that should be combined to produce the effect of a color.  A Sunday on the La Grande Jatte brought classicism into the impressionism.  The artist described this painting as neo-impressionism. (Academy/Smarthistory, Seurat, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, 2012)

Question 2:

I would want to see the pop art more than the others.  The reason I liked the pop art better is because I like cartoons.  Pop art generated a lot of the cartoon characters of that era.  The way it is painted reminds me of magnified dot matrix.  To me it makes more sense than the other two.  The analytical cubism and the abstract expressionism remind me of art that could be done by my 10-month-old granddaughter.  Maybe there is something in it for other people but not for me.
