The Gordon Rule Assignment #1

A subject that interest me is the cell, particularly, the endoplasmic reticulum. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for transporting proteins through their vesicles to the Golgi apparatus and other sites, while the smooth endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for lipid and steroid synthesis alongside with lipid metabolism and drug detoxification. There are recent studies that have shown Tunicamycin has induced endoplasmic reticulum stress, which promotes apoptosis of prostate cancer cells by activating mTORC1. Tunicamycin is an antibiotic that inhibits particular enzymes in eukaryotic cells, which is responsible for the first step of glycoprotein synthesis. mTORC1 is a protein complex that functions as a nutrient, energy, and a control for protein synthesis. This study is innovating and fascinating especially because it is something that can help patients suffering from prostate cancer, a very serious medical condition. Anything to help anyone who suffers from this horrifying disease is remarkable, so this study really is captivating. The mechanism of how this works is still unknown, but the demonstration of the effects of Tunicamycin in the endoplasmic reticulum is very clear. This study did show clinical implications due to having medical consequences on any possible patient who decides to partake in this study or choose to take this antibiotic to help with their cancerous condition – an antibiotic (Tunicamycin) was used to promote cell death by activating mTORC1 through eNOS-RagC pathway, as mentioned before, which is a medical treatment making this study clinical. There was no flaws shown in this study mentioned nor that was read due to it being a new finding, but there are always consequences to new upcoming medical findings; however, this is a very exciting study, and I would like to know just how well it works on those with prostate cancer.
