E-waste Recycling Blue Star Recyclers

Dataset

Survey conducted on e-waste recycling through convenience sampling

165 responses

Most respondents were educated with higher income

Colorado law passed in July 2013 – Illegal to dispose e-waste

Impact of E-waste disposal into landfill

Less than 20% of the 50 million tons of e-waste generated every year is ethically recycled.

E-waste represents only 2% of US landfills but contributes to 70% of overall toxic waste. The extreme amount of lead in electronics alone causes damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood and the kidneys.

50-80% of the e-waste from the industrialized world winds up in the hands of “recyclers” who ship them to developing countries like China, Ghana, Vietnam and Philippines.

Objective

Analyze the correlation between reported likeliness to recycle(continuous) and demographic variables such as gender, age, education, income and likeliness to pay to recycle(continuous).

Analyze the correlation between likeliness to pay to recycle and age, gender and income.

Analyze the correlation between awareness of CO law, awareness of a certified recycler and if people currently recycle or not.

Conclusion

Women are more willing to recycle e-waste than men

As age increases so does likeliness to recycle

There is a positive correlation between willingness to recycle and willingness to pay

Income has no correlation with willingness to pay

Those with higher incomes are actually less likely to pay for e-recycling

People are 6 times more likely to recycle if they were aware of the CO law

People are over 4 times more likely to recycle if they know an ethical recycler in the area.
