This article tracks di Prima’s long standing relationship with poet Allen Ginsberg. They are both poets and have a lot of things in common, including politics and religion. Diane met Allen early in his life and their relationship continued on for decades and she seemed to have a great admiration for him. This article serves to humanize Mr. Ginsberg and gives a unique look at him from the standpoint of a friend, rather than a Beat Generation leader and celebrity. This text serves the reader well in constructing a personality that is more understandable and earthly. Allen Ginsberg was a legend and through the years his larger than life persona has created an image that may not be completely accurate.
The purpose of this reading was to give Ginsberg more human qualities so that the reader may have a more accurate representation of who he really is. When a writer can make the reader feel emotion, there is a certain type of relatability that takes place. Emotion is a universal language and contains more reality than words or legends ever could. The reader can feel di Prima’s connection with Allen and the toll that his loss has taken on her. Greatness is often seen from afar and taken for granted up-close. Such is the case here. To di Prima, Ginsberg was just a man, a brilliant man, but a man none the less. It isn’t until he is gone that the she begins to understand just how important he was, not only to her, but to the world. Ms. di Prima does an amazing job of grabbing the reader, using the language of love to create identification in a broad audience. She artfully shatters the illusion of Ginsberg’s legend, while reinforcing it at the same time. What an amazingly written and wonderful story.
