Culminating Project Part 1

District Analysis

The following chart was created to compare the most recent Livingston Parish LEAP 2025 scores from 2021 to the previous scores from 2019 in the same grade level as well as the previous scores of the same group of students in 2019. The following data in Table 1 was accessed at https://www.louisianabelieves.com/resources/library/elementary-and-middle-school-performance. The first and fourth line of the following chart were accessed from the file titled “2021-leap-2025-state-lea-school-achievement-level-summary.” The other lines of data were found in the file titled “2019-state-lea-leap-2025-achievement-level-summary.” Scores are not available for the 2020 LEAP test due to the COVID school closures.

Table 1

Livingston Parish LEAP 2025 Achievement Level Percentages

Advanced Mastery Basic Approaching Basic Unsatisfactory

7th ELA 2021 17 40 25 12 6

7th ELA 2019 21 43 23 9 4

5th ELA 2019 6 46 31 14 4

Math 2021 2 34 37 22 4

Math 2019 2 33 43 18 4

5th Math 2019 5 40 30 21 4

In analyzing the data, it is apparent that the Livingston Parish School System has impressive mastery scores in ELA, as it is the largest category at almost half of all students. The Math scores are close, with more than half of all students scoring Mastery or Basic. In ELA, 82-87% of all students scored Basic or above, with 82% the seventh grade ELA students from 2021 scoring Basic or above,

87% of the seventh grade ELA students from 2019 scoring Basic or above, and 83% of the fifth grade ELA students from 2019 scoring Basic or above.

In Math, 73-78% of students scored basic or above, with 73% of the seventh grade Math students from 2021 scoring Basic or above, 78% of the seventh grade Math students from 2019 scoring Basic or above, and 75% of the fifth grade Math students from 2019 scoring Basic or above.

There are very low numbers of Unsatisfactory scores, with almost all being below 5%. In analyzing the data, the same group of students went from 6% to 17% Advanced in ELA from 2019-2021 despite the COVID school disruptions. Seventh graders maintained 2% Advanced in Math and went from 33% to 34% Mastery despite the COVID school disruptions.

Areas for improvement are seen in the Math LEAP 2025 test scores due to a larger percentage of students scoring Approaching Basic. These students are not scoring Unsatisfactory, so it may be possible to move them up to Basic with interventions.

School Analysis

The following chart was created to compare the most recent Denham Springs Junior High LEAP 2025 scores from 2021 to the previous scores from 2019 in the same grade level as well as the previous scores of the same group of students in 2019. The following data in Table 2 was accessed at https://www.louisianabelieves.com/resources/library/elementary-and-middle-school-performance. The first and fourth line of the following chart were accessed from the file titled “2021-leap-2025-state-lea-school-achievement-level-summary.” The other lines of data were found in the file titled “2019-school-leap-2025-achievement-level-summary.” Scores are not available for the 2020 LEAP test due to the COVID school closures.

Table 2

Denham Springs Junior High LEAP 2025 Achievement Level Percentages

Advanced Mastery Basic Approaching Basic Unsatisfactory

2021 7th ELA 19 42 18 11 11

2019 7th ELA 28 46 17 7 3

2019 5th ELA 20 45 25 6 4

2021 7th Math 2 38 36 20 5

2019 7th Math 4 35 40 18 3

2019 5th Math 8 46 27 10 8

In analyzing the data, it is apparent that Denham Springs Junior High also has impressive mastery scores in ELA, as it is the largest category at almost half of all students. The school even has higher numbers of students scoring Advanced in ELA than the district. The Math scores are also close, with more than half of all students scoring Mastery or Basic. In ELA, 79-90% of all students scored Basic or above, with the seventh grade ELA students from 2021 scoring 79% Basic or above, the seventh grade ELA students from 2019 scoring 91% Basic or above, and the fifth grade ELA students from 2019 scoring 90% Basic or above.

In Math, 76-81% of students scored basic or above, with 76% of the seventh grade Math students from 2021 scoring Basic or above, 79% of the seventh grade Math students from 2019 scoring Basic or above, and 81% of the fifth grade Math students from 2019 scoring Basic or above.

There are very low numbers of Unsatisfactory scores, with almost all being below 5% aside from the most recent ELA scores. In analyzing the data, 7th graders’ Math Mastery scores increased from 35% to 38% despite COVID school closures, which would not be accounted for by the fall off in Advanced scores. The same cohort of students had decreasing Math Unsatisfactory scores of 8% in 5th grade in 2019 to 5% in 7th grade in 2021.

Areas for improvement are seen in the Math LEAP 2025 test scores due to a larger percentage of students scoring Approaching Basic. These students are not scoring Unsatisfactory, so it may be possible to move them up to Basic with interventions. The most recent ELA scores show a significant increase in Unsatisfactory scores. This can be explained by the dramatic increase in the English Language Learner population at Denham Springs Junior High.

Vision-based Goal for Denham Springs Junior High

SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant/Realistic, and Time-Bound/Time-limited) goals

Mission statement/vision – Jackets Are Committed to Knowledge, Excellence, Teamwork, and Success.

Denham Springs Junior High, in collaboration with our parents and community, aspires to educate all students to the highest levels of academic and personal achievement, to enable them to reach and expand beyond their potential, and to prepare them to become productive, responsible, ethical, and compassionate members of society.

This goal is being made to address the most recent ELA scores which show a significant increase in Unsatisfactory scores. This can be explained by the dramatic increase in the English Language Learner population at Denham Springs Junior High. The goal will therefore be to reduce the percentage of students scoring Unsatisfactory on the LEAP 2025 ELA test. Specifically, the goal will be to reduce the percentage by one point per year moving forward. As the ELL population continues to grow, significant intervention will have to be undertaken to simply maintain ELA LEAP scores, so improving by one percentage point per year is a realistic goal moving forward.
