Social Cognitive Theory: Better Study Habits for College Students
This public health intervention consists of informing, monitoring and checking in on college students who are having trouble studying. Not studying enough because too much time is spent on a social life is risky behavior for a student who wants to succeed. The life of a college student is very exciting and often distracting. This goal of this intervention is to target the students how want help and guidance. Some students may not understand why they are falling behind.
This intervention is created exclusively for the web. Students will have privacy and have the ability to check in with a mentor at any time. There will be tools and resources given to the students at every step in the intervention. This intervention is meant to show students that sometimes all it takes is a little priority management and organization to increase success in academics. Confidence will be gained throughout the intervention and students will come to realize how important it is to stay in and do homework on a Friday night.
Individual Characteristics:
1. Self- Efficacy: Confidence will be given to students in the form of easy to understand examples (organizational tools, ect.)
2. Behavioral Capability: Students will be reminded that they have gotten this far because of how hard they have already worked.
3. Expectations: Fear of failure will be diminished after organization and time management tactics are introduced to the students. They can expect to be successful with a new approach to studying.
4. Expectancies: Students will see that there will be an increase in GPA and opportunities after graduation.
5. Self-Control: Students must commit to a decrease in social life. Mentors and monitoring student behavior is helpful during this phase.
6. Emotional Coping: It is difficult to miss out on social events however -- the students will see that there is a healthy amount of social life. It is important to remind the students that our friends do not share our GPA or go on job interviews with us.
Environmental Factors:
1. Vicarious Learning: Students will be provided with positive examples of people who have put studying as their number one priority. Including people they look up to.
2. Situation: Students will be given information about different housing opportunities and hours to the library and tutors.
3. Reinforcement: Students will check in daily with their mentor and to show how well they are doing.
4. Reciprocal Determinism: After the student sees the great success, improvement and confidence boost in their academics they are sure to change their habits and get their priorities straight.
