Design and Planning of PHCs
INTRODUCTION & PROBLEM STATEMENT ‐ Gambella , Ethiopia has a large South Sudanese refugee
population fleeing civil war ‐ recent estimates show 75‐125K new arrivals in 2017, total
408,500 ‐ 88% are women and children ‐ Child mortality 51 per 1,000 live births, Maternal mortality
353 per 100,000 live births ‐ UNHCR works with local ARRA, regional health bureaus, HEWs,
and NGOs to coordinate health services ‐ Acute malnutrition among refugees in Gambella nearly 30% ‐ Only half of mothers exclusively breastfeed in Ethiopia ‐ Top causes of maternal mortality: obstructed labor/uterine
rupture, hemorrhage, hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, sepsis/infection
‐ Low amount of SBA (29.1%), low transportation access, low rate of postnatal checks within 48 hours (3%)
PROJECT GOAL & OBJECTIVES Goal: To reduce neonatal mortality among refugees in Gambella.
