Reading Reflection

This week’s reading, Chapter 12 focuses on research ethics and Chapter 13 focuses on participant recruitment. Research ethics are used in providing guidelines which are used in ensuring that the research is conducted responsibly (Sia, n.d.). Additionally, they are used in ensuring a high ethical standard by educating and monitoring the scientists who conduct the research. One of the research ethics used in the book is consent to the right treatment which mostly depends on the relationship between the health practitioners and patients involved in the particular research (Tappen, 2016). Since most of the patients rely on the researchers, honesty is one of the main ethics in research. They need to be honest while providing them with information on the research, in the data and results they provide, and throughout the procedures and processes during the study. Participant recruitment can be conducted in many different ways. One can send the potential participants letters or postcards inviting them to join the research, distribute and displaying flyers, brochures, pamphlets, and posters, approach the potential participants one-on-one to tell them about the research, holding health fairs and community outreach activities that will attract potential participants, placing phone calls, messages, and emails through patient portals or listservs, and/or advertising through newsletters, local papers, social media, radio, or television (Tappen, 2016)
