RESPONSE 1 Horace

Evaluate the research questions and hypotheses.

Dank et al., (2014) study over dating violence experiences of LGB youth asks four specific questions that are a logical extension of the study’s purpose. The goal of the research seems to bring awareness to the dating challenge associated with the gender identity and the sexual orientation of youth. Therefore, I found that the research questions do clearly address the problem. For example, the first question seeks to understand how often LGB youth experience and or perpetuate violent dating acts (Dank et al.,2014). This question is clear, concise and reflects the overall goal of the study.  Likewise, the research questions are aligned per the qualitative approach and evidence that address a need for programs to service these students (Dank et al., 2014). According to Dank et al., (2014), data was collected using a cross-sectional design. Based on the study’s population and the overall approach and data collection process, the research questions are also aligned to the selected data collection method.

Identify the type of quantitative research design used and explain how the researchers implemented the design.

Reading over the study, I did not locate a specification of a particular quantitative research design. However, the authors do reference the collection of qualitative evidence at the end of the introduction (Dank et al. (2014). Therefore, I reviewed the study from a qualitative approach. The central question does relate to the approach and the research questions begin with how, are and do. Exploratory verbs are used such as how often, are there and do LGB youth seek (Dank et al., 2014). Finally, the participants are specified along with the research site.

Analyze alignment among the theory, problem, purpose, research questions and hypotheses, and design.

The study is in alignment among all required components for dissertation writing. All parts are easily identifiable and written in a clear and concise manner.  I would have liked to have seen a defined section for the problem statement and purpose. However, I found the student to be well written and material to other areas besides scholarly reading and/or review.

Evaluate the research questions and hypotheses:

Laureate Education (Producer). (2015) discusses systematic steps in conducting quantitative research.  Quantitative research begins by identifying a problem and purpose statement, followed by posing a research question. Research questions, in return, helps to stay focus on the study. Next, a literature review is used to support the findings of the study. After that, a hypothesis is constructed, and a choice of research-designed methods is determined. Finally, hypotheses are tested, and conclusions are drawn.  All these steps seem a daunting task, but they are all interdependent, making the research design authentic and solid.  In the article, McConnell et al. (2015) clearly states the research question; does GPA alone represent one's readiness for postsecondary education and employment?  In the article's discussion section and after the research question, the authors shared the authors' purpose for this study. Thus, the purpose and hypotheses seemed the same as the purpose was tested in the study.  On the other hand, hypotheses indicate the possible outcome of the study.  The purpose of the article was to examine the relationships between non-academic behaviors of employment and postsecondary education for youth with disabilities measured by the TAGG, and (a) percentage of time secondary students with disabilities receive instruction in general education, (b) GPA of secondary students with disabilities (McConnell et al., 2015).

The authors used a correlational research design method for this study.  In a correlational research design, two variables are studied.  The authors studied two variables which are predictor (independent) variable and criterion (dependent) variables.  Pearson correlations were used to collect the data.  The study was conducted for two years.  All the participants were stated in an orderly manner.  For this study, 1219 individuals from 49 school districts across nine states participated.  One thousand two hundred nineteen individuals included 650 students with disabilities, 497 family members, and 72 high school special educators.

Identify the type of quantitative research design used and explain how the researchers implemented the design

The authors didn’t mention that quantitative research design is used but instead talked about correlational research design for this study.  Correlational design is one form of the quantitative research model.  The research questions are descriptive, and the data collected is in the form of surveys.

Pearson correlation was used to collect the data.

Analyze alignment among the theory, problem, purpose, research questions and hypotheses, and design.

Through literature, the authors support the theory and show the need for the research.

The article begins by stating that education has changed over the years by implementing various educational reforms.

The recent initiative emphasized college and carrier readiness.  The need for college and carrier readiness has led to providing importance to academics.

In addition, the colleges accept students with higher GPA.   This scenario works in normal circumstances, but students with disabilities face challenges to meet the desired goal. Students with disabilities require additional life skills in addition to academics.  The literature supports that the problem exists and that it is needed to be studied additionally.  The problem and purpose statement is established.  Research questions and hypotheses are intertwined.  A quantitative research study in the form of a correlational research design is established.  This study shows that time spent by special needs students in the inclusion classroom, student GPA, and the non-academic constructs measured by TAGG are related to post-school employment and education. Yet, TAGG scores, GPA, and percentage of time in general education are not related.

It does not give a clear picture of whether students with disabilities will be successful in post-school academics or employment settings.

On a side note, I felt a little lost when reading the scores.  It was all Greek and Latin trying to make sense of descriptive data.
