Evaluating a Job Offer
Utilize the website listed for each section to answer the following questions.
1- https://www.salary.com/research/salary Enter your desired job title and the city you want to live in. Click on the correct title from the search list. When you see the page with the chart and other information answer the following:
What is the national median salary for your target job?
Click on the “Benefits” tab. Add up the benefits listed there. What is the total amount that benefits add to your salary.
2- https://www.payscale.com/cost-of-living-calculator
Scroll down to bottom to browse by state. Select your desired state, then city.
What is the overall cost of living as compared to the national average?
For Housing? For Utilities? For Groceries?
Scroll down the page.
What is the median home price? What is the median rent? Given your salary figures from above what implications does this have for you?
How does the cost of healthcare compare to the national average? What implications does this have for you?
3- https://www.indeed.com/companies
Enter the name and city for an employer you would like to work for. Answer the following.
What is the overall rating for that employer?
Click on the “Reviews” tab. Scroll through the posted reviews. What common themes come up? What does this mean for you as a potential employee?
Click on the “Salaries” tab. What is the salary listed for your job title? How does that compare to the national and city adjusted information above?
Click on the “Interviews” tab. What is the difficulty rating?
What is the attire breakdown? What do you think it would be for your position?
Evaluating a City
4- https://www.homefair.com/real-estate/city-profile/
Type in your desired state and city. Select your desired zip code. If you do not know, open a separate web browser and identify which zip codes you would like to live in.
What is the median age? What implications does that have on you and your lifestyle?
What is the median household income?
How does this compare to your average salary?
Look at the mean travel time to work and the other commuting options. How do they fit with how much/how you would like to commute?
5- Find your city’s Visitor’s Center online. Answer the following questions.
What are the key forms of entertainment? How does that compare to what you enjoy?
Look at the calendar of events. Look at the next several months. What events are interesting to you?
6- https://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/
Scroll down the page, select the state you want to live in. Once you have the state page, scroll down and select the city you want to live in.
How does the crime rate compare to the state average? To the national average?
How does all this information impact your job search?
