CASE STUDY

Theory: Roy Adaptation Model

Scientific Assumption: System relationships include acceptance, protection, and fostering interdependence.

Mr. Reynolds care will have to include accepting the fact that his right leg below the knee has been amputated and the fact that he is separated from his wife and estranged from his family. Since he has a history of depression and schizophrenia, he will have to protect himself from going to depression because of his current condition. Being placed in a suitable rehabilitation facility, where he will continue his recovery will be a way of fostering interdependence.

Assessment of behaviors: In this case, Mr. Reynolds is going through a status-post motorcycle accident trauma. He has a history of depression and schizophrenia. He also has a dysfunctional family. All these factors will influence how he handles the stressors.

Assessment of stimuli: Finding out that he separated from his wife and that he is estranged from his family tells the nurse that Mr. Reynolds has no support system. This may push him further into depression as a support system is very important and influential when it comes to dealing with trauma (Baksi Şimşek & Dicle, 2015).

Nursing diagnosis: The nurse identifies that first, Mr. Reynolds is traumatized by the amputation. Second, the history of depression and schizophrenia may indicate the high risk factors of him going through both again. Third, the lack of support from his wife and family may be another stressor that may hinder proper recovery. She realizes that all these factors may weigh heavily on him.

Goal setting: The nurse helps Mr. Reynolds in setting short-term goals that are attainable based on the diagnosis. They include him starting his physiotherapy and him joining a support group by a certain date (Dobratz, 2014).

Intervention: The nurse can help social work in finding the right rehabilitation placement for Mr. Reynolds and Providing him with the moral support that goes beyond the professional basis as he is all alone in his recovery journey.
