Starting this week, we will explore a number of “web 2.0 tools” that can be integrated to enhance instruction and learning. Web 2.0 refers to the current generation of web-based individual applications that have been created with collaboration, sharing, and/or new information creation in mind.
In education, we (instructional technologists, teachers, librarians, trainers) can use Web 2.0 tools to create shareable artifacts for participants to access, read/view, and post responses to facilitate higher level thinking skills, communication, and increase productivity. Some examples Web of 2.0 tools include but are not limited to Blogs (EduBlog), wikis, video/screen casting (Jing, screencast-o-matic), social bookmarking (Digg), picture/video sharing (Flicker, YouTube), online community (FaceBook, LinkedIn), and cloud applications and storage (Google Apps/Drive).

This week you will use a screen recording tool, Screencast-o- Matic to create a simple but complete how-to tutorial on a subject of your choice. For Mac users, you may use QuickTime Player for the assignment.
You will also embed this how-to tutorial in your e-Portfolio site as part of your technology showcase. Here are some examples you may review:

Prepare an instructional how-to tutorial for your target audience (general public, students, trainees, etc.). Select some meaningful topic as you consider yourself as a teacher. Here are some examples of topics you may choose from:
How to add music in iTunes
How to perform an advanced Google search (See Assignment 4’s Resources page)
How to reset your NIU password (Do not choose this.)
How to create a personal page on Blackboard
How to use mail merge wizard in MS Word to generate a set of mailing labels
Any how-to topic that is relevant to your work or major. For example, how to use an online BMI calculator from the CDC web site.
Your tutorial must meet the following requirements:
Use Screencast-O-Matic (Windows, Mac, or Browser-based) OR Jing (Windows or Mac) OR QuickTime Player (Mac only) to capture your how-to tutorial.
Introduce who you are and what is your topic. (Note that say your name and topic briefly.)
The how-to tutorial should be “well-defined and meaningful.”
The word “meaningful” means that instruction should teach a complete and useful procedural skill. For example, teach student parents how to navigate the school web site; how to perform an advanced Google search; how to install and use MS Excel Data Analysis Toolkit to perform a descriptive data analysis, etc.
The word, “well-defined” means that the instruction should be based on the pre-determined performance objective (e.g., ABCD based performance objective – audience, behavior, conditions, degree).
The length of the tutorial must be no less than one minute and no longer than three minutes.
The how-to tutorial must be embedded in a new page on your e-Portfolio site:
A brief description includes information about the target audience, purpose, and what the learner will learn from this tutorial

Screencast-O-Matic is a free screen recorder for instant screen capture and sharing. You can use this recording tool right in your browser without an install at Screencast-O-Matic.com or download it to run anytime. Educators use it to create how-to tutorials, troubleshooting guides, software demonstrations to support learning and using technology.
To use Screencast-O-Matic right in your browser
Go to http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/
Click “Start Recording.”
In Google Chrome, 3.1 Install the application by clicking “Get recorder launcher” 3.2 If Open File – Security Warning pops up, click “Run”.
3.3 When the installation is complete, you will see External Protocol Request, click “Launch Application”.
In Mozilla Firefox, 5.1 After downloading the file, run click try again. 5.2 If seeing , click . And allow for the this time or remember the website. You can update java or click later if your java is out of date. 5.3 Click Download Launcher, save the file, and run the file (The downloaded file is normally saved in “Download” folder as user’s default setting. Some people’s default setting is on Desktop.) 5.4 After step 5.3, click try again on the screen

Follow these steps to record the video,
Upload the published video to your Google Drive by dragging-and-dropping the video file to your Google Drive.

QT (MAC)
Mac OSX users can easily create video screen recordings using the included QuickTime Player application, version 10. These videos can be helpful for creating software demonstrations and teaching materials. To start a video screen recording, launch QuickTime Player.
Choose a how-to topic.
Record your how-to tutorial using QuickTime Player.
From QuickTime Player, select File Menu > New Screen Recording.

The recording panel opened.
Click on the reverse triangle button on the right side of the panel to set up audio inputs, video quality, and save location.
Click the red Record button when you're ready. You will get a confirmation screen with instructions on what/how to record.
After you are done with recording, go to File > Export to save a copy of the recorded tutorial on your desktop.
Make sure you name the file correctly and save to a location you can find (e.g., desktop).

Log in to your Google Drive.
Upload the recorded tutorial to your Google Drive.
Share the uploaded tutorial.
Go to your ePortfolio site and create a new web page.
Name this new page as “Screencast” and place it under the “Technology” section. Add a description about the tutorial (purpose, objective, audiences, etc.).
Go to Insert > Video > Google Docs Video to import the recorded tutorial to the web page. Adjust width and height of the tutorial as needed.
Submit the recorded tutorial (from your desktop) and e-Portfolio url (web link) to Blackboard for grading.

Copy your e-Portfolio Site URL
Insert the site link to the course Blackboard for grading.
Go to Blackboard > Assignments
Click the name of the assignment (i.e., Week/Session 6: screen cast). The Upload Assignment page appears.
Paste the e-Portfolio link on to the text editor window
Highlight the link and then click the Hyperlink button to enter /activate the Web link
Attach the downloaded screencast video file .
Submit for grading.

Criteria
Late assignments/projects will receive half credit if turned in within one week of the due date. Assignments/projects later than one week will receive no credit.
Because life can be rather unpredictable at times, you are all allowed one late project for the semester. This allows you to turn in the project late up to 10 days after it was due. Obviously, this allowed late does not apply to handing in your final portfolio.
