ETST 002 Rubric for: Analytical Response Paper
The analytical response essay is designed to be a short but substantive exercise in a fundamental research task: to search for and critically summarize an academic article published in the flagship scholarly journal of the field: Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies. Students must select and synthesize a full-length academic essay from Aztlán, not a book review or a shorter piece from the Dossier section of the journal. The article that students select must not already appear on our syllabus as required reading. Below is a recommended rubric for this assignment, presented as a list of guiding questions as well as recommended length for each section (keep in mind that the recommended length can vary depending on the article, student’s writing style etc.). -Did you accurately and clearly identify and state the research question and/or topic of the article? (This can be done in a couple of sentences in the opening paragraph of your paper) -Did you clearly summarize the research method or approach of the chosen article (e.g. data, primary sources, cultural productions etc. analyzed by the author)? (As this section is the “meat” of the article so to speak, it should be a bit lengthier [at least a paragraph or two]) -Did you clearly convey the arguments and conclusions drawn by the author(s)? (As this portion is intended to capture the “contribution” or “takeaway” of the article, it is also a central task of this assignment). -Did you state whether you agreed/disagreed with the article’s argument and analysis and explain why this was the case? (This section is intended to incentivize critical reflection on and can be done briefly toward the end of the assignment by way of conclusion) Taken together, this short but substantive assignment (2 pages double-spaced) will further sharpen students’ basic research and analytical skills of searching for and synthesizing academic articles and expose them to the breadth of research done an in interdisciplinary field like Chicano/Chicana/Chicanx Studies, all the while incentivizing critical self-reflection on the part of the student. As this assignment is based on one article of your choosing, you don’t need to necessarily cite any additional sources beyond the essay you have selected. However, make sure you follow any citational or formatting styles that your TA may have provided, as they are the ones who perform the crucial task of grading. In that spirit, this rubric is meant to supplement not supersede any guidelines provided by your TA for this assignment.
