Anthropology 2
ETHNOGRAPHIC PAPER
ANTH 2– WALSH, WINTER 2020
Students enrolled in this course will deliver a 1500-word (about 5 pages) ethnographic
paper to Gauchospace before lecture on Monday, March 9th. The purpose of this paper
is to familiarize students with the process of doing research and writing in sociocultural
anthropology. Students will develop this research project with their TAs in their
discussion sections. In this paper, the student will address the following question:
How do humans experience and understand their relation to other animals?
To address this question, students are expected to:
1) Choose a group of people to be studied. This group can be defined in terms of occupation, class, race, place, age, gender or any other social characteristic or
identity.
2) Carry out ethnographic fieldwork with at least 5 people from this group. Students will utilize ethnographic methods such as interviews, observation and casual
conversations, and will document the responses of those people studied. Email
and texting is not sufficient.
3) Analyze the data using concepts presented in course lectures, readings, and films. 4) Comply with Human Subjects guidelines.
The Ethnographic Paper will have six parts:
1) Introduction (1 paragraph): briefly identifies the group studied, the methods used to answer the question, and the main analytical conclusion reached by the student.
2) Group Description (about 1 page): describes the group selected. This includes the reasons for selecting this group, the number of people the student spoke with
from that group, and other relevant information.
3) Methods (about 1 page): describes the methods utilized and the data generated. 4) Data Analysis and Conclusion (about 3 pages): uses concepts from the course to
analyze the data and present a conclusion.
5) Bibliography: lists the texts cited in the paper. Note: ONLY use assigned course materials: lectures, films, AAA website, etc.
6) Appendix: includes the interview questions, and fieldnotes from interviews and observation. The appendix is in addition to the five page ethnography.
