Weight: 5% of the Overall Grade
Required: A written report of 1,500 words
Ethics Report Due: Friday 27 April 2018 (Week 8) at 5pm
The first submission is the final submission. No changes are permitted after submission.
Topic: “Ethical Challenges in the Finance Industry: What must you do to prepare yourself for
those challenges? Identify and examine some of the major contemporary ethical
issues/problems in the finance industry and critically analyse some of the main ethical
challenges that you would face when working in the finance industry. In your report you
must consider what you must do to prepare yourself for those challenges.”
The Ethics Report must be written using the report format. The word length is 1,500
words. It must have a cover page, a signed declaration that it is your own work and an
executive summary. The cover page and declaration are not included in the word count and
are excluded from the similarity score. Certain key words and key phrases (each phrase with
up to a maximum of 3 words) are also not included in the word count and will generally be
excluded from the similarity score. Short quotations of up to 20 words are permitted from a
single source and the total word count of all quotations used must not exceed 40 words. Your
report would still be considered as plagiarized if a sentence or a sequence of sentences is
edited using slight modifications of the original words. The sources must be acknowledged
and referenced correctly, using the Harvard Referencing Guide. Your report must have both
in-text references and a list of those references used.
You must write in your own words using your own structure for the report. You must show
your critical understanding of the ethical issues, problems and challenges. Whenever
possible, illustrate with your own example(s) and/or appropriate graph(s).
The ethics report must be uploaded to the portal "Ethics Report (Turnitin)" before its due
date. The first submission is the final submission. No changes are permitted after submission.
Late submission will not be assessed. Turnitin is used to check for originality. The similarity
score of your submitted work must be less than 10% and the similarity score must be less
than 5% from a single source. 10% of the full mark will be deducted for each 1% of
similarity score. Your work will not be graded if its similarity score exceeds 10% or its
similarity score from a single source exceeds 5%.
The marking criteria are as below:
A: Your written report must be clear, concise and precise. A well-written report is one that:
(1) express arguments and information clearly, precisely and concisely in language
appropriate for the intended context and purpose, and with accurate expression/grammar;
and, (2) present all arguments and information logically and convincingly with no repetitive
or irrelevant materials. The text must be structured coherently and effectively to promote
understanding. It must be free of grammatical, spelling and word choice errors. The value of
A is between 0 and 1.
B: Your written report must cover both the breadth and depth of relevant issues, problems
and challenges. It must show that you are adequately aware of the underlying issues and/or
problems, both breadth and depth wise. Special effort must be made to demonstrate that you
have a firm understanding of the relevant key issues. At least 10 references (excluding
Wikipedia, Investopedia and similar websites) must be used and, on average, at least two
2
references (excluding Wikipedia, Investopedia and similar websites) must be used to support
each of your arguments. The value of B is between 0 and 1.
C: Does your answer show that you demonstrated the ability to critically evaluate the
alternatives? Are your interpretations of the arguments correct and indicate the capacity to
make considered judgements? The value of C is between 0 and 1.
D: Is the quality of written expression of an acceptable standard? Is material taken from
previously published material adequately acknowledged and referenced? You must cite all
sources where you obtained the information, including sources where you obtained the
idea(s) from and sources where you obtain the basic direction(s). You must cite every source
that you have used for your report, including Wikipedia, Investopedia and similar websites if
you have used them. The value of D is between 0 and 1.
Your score for the ethics report would be calculated as r=(A*B*C*D*10 -10*S) where S is
the similarity score and the value of S is between 0 and 100. For example, if the similarity
score is 3%, your mark for the term project report would be calculated as r=(A*B*C*D*10 –
3).
