Ethics Assignment: Ethics, CSR and a Hotel Group
You are to choose a hotel chain and present its program of CSR. You are then to analyze it using two of the ethics theories we’ve studied (Utilitarianism, Kant’s Categorical Imperatives, Rawls’ Justice Theory or Virtue ethics).
An article in week 7 of elearning: “Corporate Social Responsibility: what are top hotel companies reporting” can be very useful. It surveys the following companies: Marriott, Extended Stay Hotels, Accor, InterContinental, Theraldson Enterprises, Global Hyatt, Interstate Hotels & Resorts, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Lourve Hotels, and Hilton. Choose one of these, another major hotel group or perhaps a cruise ship.
Organize it as follows:
Give a brief overview of the hotel chain. Then summarize their CSR program, the main points as they address the 3 Ps. This should include the good they are doing and the bad they are reducing/avoiding.
Analyze how well the program works from the two ethical theories you have chosen. In this section, demonstrate your knowledge of the theories and show that you can apply it to your hotel’s situation. It may (or may not) lead to differing conclusions. Go deep!
Finally, what is your individual analysis? Answer questions such as: Are they doing things that end up being bad? Are they not doing things that would be good? Are they doing things only for show? Is there a conflict between maximizing profit and operating in a sustainable way? Are any of their actions (or their core practices) contrary to their stated CSR practices – that is, are they being hypocritical in any ways? What would you do to improve the CSR practices of your chosen hotel?
