ASSIGNMENT 1.

Read and respond to the following scenario. Consider the APA ethical guidelines and other laws and guidelines as you are aware of them. Once you have posted by addressing the questions of concern, you will be able to see other student posts and responses. You must make your initial post (responding to the questions on your own) and a second post that considers/responds to posts of other students in the course.

Activity 1

Dr. Endo Morph is an easy-going and pleasant psychologist, yet he often fails to show up for appointments after his extended lunches at the Sizzler all-you-can-eat buffet. His partner and brother Dr. Ecto Morph sees this as an opportunity to take over the clinic by reporting this ethics violation to the local ethics committee. He doesn’t warn his brother before making the report.

Activity 2

Dr. Lunck has been seeing Roger for therapy for approximately 2 months.  Everything he tries seems to do nothing and Roger seems to be getting worse.  Dr. Lunck is beginning to feel he is not competent in this area of psychopathology at such an extreme level.

Activity 3

You lead an evening therapy group for drug abusing women.  After group, one of the women does not have a ride home.  If she walks home, she will have to pass through a part of town where a lot of drug sales and use occurs.  She tells you this and asks you to give her a ride home.

Activity 4

You and your spouse have been shopping for a new home.  You found a beautiful house on the market that meets all of your needs.  After you make an offer on the home you discover that it belongs to one of your clients who has a borderline personality disorder.

Activity 5

You have been seeing a woman in therapy for some time and have a good therapeutic alliance.  During one of her therapy sessions, she tells you that five years ago she killed both of her parents and set fire to their home.  She says the police think it was an accident.

Activity 6

Dr. Smith is a clinical psychologist and an active member of his church.  His church decides to prepare and disseminate guidelines to assist and advise parents of how to deal with alcohol experimentation among their children.  As spokesman of the committee which prepared the guidelines, Dr. Smith discusses the guidelines in several media interviews.  During these interviews, he is identified as a clinical psychologist.

Activity 7

Elmo Brush agreed to paint the house of Peel Paint Ph.D., in exchange for psychotherapy for Brush’s teenage daughter.  Dr. Paint saw the girl for 6 sessions and terminated her therapy. Brush complained that his end of the bargain would have brought him $1800 in a conventional deal. Thus, it was as although he had paid $300 a session for the services of a person who normally charged $100 a session. Dr. Paint argued that he had satisfactorily resolved the daughter’s problems and the deal was valid because task was granted for task, not dollar value for dollar value. 

Activity 8

Qmos Quark, Psy.D., retested a child who had been given the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fourth Edition by another examiner two months earlier.  The youngster, who was impaired and diagnosed with intellectual disability, earned an IQ 3 to 5 points higher when Quark tested him, and Quark told the child’s parents that this was “a sign he could be making some real intellectual progress.”

Activity 9

Last month a friend of yours arranged for you to have a blind date.  The friend had talked to you about this potential date for several months and the person certainly sounded wonderful.  You and your blind date agreed to meet at a neutral place and proceeded to have a wonderful evening.  Sure enough, the person is everything your friend had said.  Toward the end of the evening your date makes the comment that he/she was certainly fortunate to run across you and your group several years ago when the plant closed.  Although you did not recognize the person, it was apparently one of your counselees from July 2012.

Activity 12

You receive a call from a member of the family who states that he just discovered you were treating the individual who committed suicide.  He asks you to meet to discuss the case.  He also asks if you are going to attend the funeral.

What do you think are the three most important things to remember for behaving ethically as a psychology professional? You only need to post once but might be interested in seeing what your peers share as important.

What About Bob Movie Assignment?

While watching the What About Bob movie you are to identify and indicate all of the instances of ethical inappropriateness or potential ethical problems portrayed and what section of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologist and Code of Conduct, they relate to. You do not need to indicate the number of the ethics code, but how it is relevant.  For example, the Psychiatrist being a friend as well as therapist would be a dual role.
